in here, as I've never had issues about changing my KDE3 or TDE menus.
Is your system is set up for multiple users? That would be a reason to
restrict permissions on such items.

No, not real users although I do run some things as their own user just
for sandboxing.
Interestingly looooooong list of root owned stuff, all dated Juner 17
2016, which is the date I installed wheezy IIRC.

And while I know it only takes 1 to screw it up, 7927 files here in
my /home/gene directory does sound excessive.
