Hi Jim, I use TDE on a VirtualBox machine all the time (Debian testing) and audio works fine here. This just to say that running in a VM is not a limiting factor. What is interesting in your case is that the problem persists through a reboot. This seems to point to a setup/config issue for some reasons.
1. Do you use only arts? or do you have PA or pipewire installed too? 2. what options do you have in the Sound server control module? 3. is it possible that for some reasons the audio of the VM is zerod out in the host mixer? or sent to a different output? Basically try to figure out whether the problem is from the guest or host. 4.. if you use a different DE in the same VM, do you have the same issue?
Cheers Michele

Hello,
I've tried R14.1.2 with both Devuan Daedalus and Debian 12.5. In both, sound initially works fine, but after adjusting the volume up or down even one notch, using the system tray volume slider, sound immediately stops working. I've tried adjusting volume levels in the full KMix, but can't get sound working again. I tried both "aplay" and "artsplay" and both succeed with no errors, but nothing is heard.
In case it matters, these installations are in VirtualBox running under a Manjaro Linux host. Sound works fine in the host.
This problem persists through a logout or even a reboot of the VM, so I assume some volume level is just messed up. Anybody have an idea how to diagnose what is not set properly?
Hi Michele and Nik,
Thanks so much to you and Nik for your prompt and complete responses! BTW, as requested, I have turned off HTML in my response email here. Sorry about that on the original post.
I have solved the problem, with input from both of you. First, here are my answers to your questions:
1. No PulseAudio nor pipewire; this problem occurred with the stock arts, after a minimal (console login) install of Devuan or Debian 12.5, followed by the standard "aptitude install tde-trinity". 2. Not sure where the "Sound server control module" options you mentioned are found. I hadn't changed anything, except KMix settings. Everything else was tested immediately after a fresh install of TDE. 3. Audio was set to standard settings that work for me with other VM's, in VirtualBox and host audio / mixer settings. 4. Tried a fresh install in VirtualBox of Devuan with their standard XFCE desktop install option, which installs PulseAudio but not pipewire. Sound works fine, again with the same VirtualBox audio settings as in answer #3. I also bumped volume up and down, which caused the original problem in TDE; still no problems.
Apparently the issue, as I originally suspected, was that one or more audio settings were somehow defaulted either to "off" (in KMix) or 0% volume in KMix, when bumping volume up or down with the taskbar volume slider. I thought I had played with all of the settings in KMix, but here are the critical ones that worked for me:
* PCM must be "on", in KMix. * I also used the following settings, from a Konsole (from Nik). $ amixer sset PCM 100% $ amixer sset Master 60% on After doing those three things, sound was OK. Perhaps, after an initial install, if the user presses Up or Down in the volume control, some other default volume settings/switches get set for the user, by KMix or some other entity? Not sure what that may be, but perhaps something to look into. One other thing that is probably a small bug, at least when running in a VM, is that KMix initially draws with most of the sliders invisible. If I drag the KMix window slightly with the mouse, a redraw occurs, and all controls are then visible. (I noticed a few other dialog windows that did the same thing, but can't remember what those others were. KMix exhibits this bug quite reliably.) Thanks again! -- Jim On 5/4/24 11:31 PM, Michele Calgaro via tde-users wrote:

Hi Jim,
* PCM must be "on", in KMix.
Indeed it has to be "on" :-)
Not sure what that may be, but perhaps something to look into.
Yeah, it does sounds a bit weird and could possibly put user off, like it happened to you.

Yes, I notice this in VM as well and seems related to the 3D acceleration settings. As soon as you move a window, it gets redrawn and everything is visible, but it can be quite annoying at times.

Thanks, Michele, for that suggestion on the 3D settings in VirtualBox. I'll try that.
I've been using TDE for several years, on an old Chromebook, and on a Raspberry Pi. Haven't tried the latest version on those machines, but wanted to try it in the VM. In general, I really like TDE (especially the "Keramik" theme and the sounds--reminds me of my early Linux days with Mandrake 9.1). I would love to continue using it on at least an older machine, as long as possible. The low memory usage, snappy response, and beautiful design make it a true gem.

+1!
Btw I forgot to mention in my previous reply that the sound server is in the Trinity Control center --> Sound & multimedia --> Sound System. Then look into the Hardware tab (although you have solved the issue already).
Cheers Michele
It would be nice if you would configure your mail client to send a plaintext part of your message, too.
Anyway, I have this in .xsessionrc - but use alsamixer first to find what's going on. The sleep is there due some race condition I was too lazy to solve:
# Mixer Problem ( sleep 20 amixer sset PCM 100% amixer sset Master 60% on if [ ! -z "$(cat /sys/devices/virtual/dmi/id/product_family|grep -i ThinkPad amixer sset Speaker 0% off amixer sset Headphone 100% on amixer sset Headphone,0 on amixer sset Headphone,1 on fi ) &
