Trinity on my new box sometimes starts shutting down and then hangs. I have tried giving it time, but once it has hung, I can leave it for several hours without movement. The file system does not appreciate it whne I use the on/off button or the reset button.
My system is: Debian Squeeze Trinity 3.5.13 with Slavek's patches GA-Z77-DS3H motherboard / on 64 GB SATA SSD /home on SATA 2TB drive
Where do I go from here?
Thanks, Lisi

Check if your computer shutthing down if you run "halt" manually. If not, try "halt -p". If is working the second case, check in kdmrc how the shutting down is performed, with "halt" or "halt -p".
I have no idea if Debian use systemd, but take a look there:

I would say like 1233, except that it doesn't do it every time.

Including a prompt for password for the maintenance? Please, you have kernel from distribution, or backports? Platform - amd64 × i386?

It usually gets stuck at a very early stage. I repeat, that it doesn't do this every time, and if I could find a way of getting out of the hang without messing up my file system I could probably live with it. Tho' it would be nice not to have to do so.
Thanks, Slavek. You are stalwart as well as a genius!

When it hangs, works even login on text console? If so, kdm_greet is still running? And if so, try to kill it: killall -9 kdm_greet.

Hi, Slávek!
I haven't tried. I haven't had a chance to try! The machine is too busy not shutting down.
I'll watch out for a chance to try it. Which is probably the best way possible of ensuring that it doesn't fail for days!
Come to think of it I could/should have tried ssh-ing in.

What do you see on the screen once it has stopped doing anything? Is it a blank X screen or has X closed down and dropped you back to the console? If you've been dropped back to the console, are there any relevant messages on the it? If you're left with a blank X display when it hangs can you do a Ctrl&Alt&F1 to get to the console?

Or can you press Ctrl&Alt&Del when it hangs. Mine hang from time to time on shutting down timidity-daemon. I than was able to press Ctrl&Alt&Del and shut down proceeded. I de-installed the deamon, now the problem is gone.

Whatever would be on teh screen at that point in the shut-down. The desktop backgroind with nothiong on it, the desktop background with a message saying that Trinity is shutting down, a blank screen...
I didn't try that first time (which is teh only time I have had a blank screen), I don't think, just as I didn't ssh in. But I tried quite a few things.

At least once, I couldn't. But I'll try again, when it happens again.
However, since I posted here it has behaved impeccably, as I predicted it would. ;-)
Thanks, Lisi

I know of two problems with shutting down:
1. Shutdown from KDM: KDM disappear, appear text console, but nothing happens. It is possible to login to a text console. When kdm_greed killed, shutdown continues. This case is easily reproducible.
2. Logout from the desktop TDE: Appears logout status dialog, but after a while, there seems no other activity. After switching to a text console and loging in, htop shows Xorg running at 100%. This case happens rarely - difficult to reproduce.
I believe that both of these cases related to bugs in locking in libX11 - see XInitThreads. In case 1) I found that waiting for the lock because QCursor (no idea why). In case 2) Xorg hangs in the "perfectly" named function WaitingForSomething. For this is not much to say - I do not know where to look.
As the easiest solution for this time seems to me add to Trinity sources updated package libX11. However it is not very convenient solution. But to find a solution to these problems - to avoid problems with locking, can be challenging and time consuming. Now what?
And then there's another problem, but for this I do not know other details: 3. Shutdown is performed, but not complete + http://bugs.pearsoncomputing.net/show_bug.cgi?id=1209 + http://bugs.pearsoncomputing.net/show_bug.cgi?id=1233
This I could never reproduce.

Lisi, Alexis, others,
If you want, I can send you updated packages libX11, that you can try if it helps in resolving your fault shutdown. For now, I do not want to include these packages into PPA. If you verify that this update will help, we will start the debate about inclusion.
Note: This is currently related only to Debian Squeeze. For Ubuntu Lucid and Maverick I would prepare an update libX11 later.

I have temporarily abandoned my new computer in disgust and come back to the old one. So the emails that I had tried to transfer across will now be out of date.
If I can unstick myself and get back to the new computer I'll try your patch and report back.
Thanks, Lisi
