High again,
I remember mirror servers being a topic multiple times recently,
but iirc, that was about system specific repositories.
Now I'm trying to download 14.0.2 to compile it myself, and I
have (been) navigated to
http://ftp.fau.de/trinity/releases/R14.0.2/downloads.html
In the second-last line it says:
The high speed file mirror currently in use was selected
at random. All mirror information is available on the main
Trinity project page at https://www.trinitydesktop.org.
I don't find any mirror info there... not even the word "mirror".
I also searched the wiki, with an astonishing little number of
hits, one related to GIT ("check out the entire source tree from
mirror"), another to "Building KDE 3.5 with Konstruct", which
appears to be quite obsolete, despite it's more or less recent
timestamp from 2014-05-07, and the last one about "ULab
NIUInstallNotes", where I guess that it's not about the source
tarballs.
I also looked through other pages, without finding any hint
about mirrors, so my question: there seems to be a list of
mirrors maintained, but it doesn't seem to be visible to the
end users, only to scripts, on which the user has to rely?
I'm asking, because connections to the mirror at fau.de are not
particularly stable from my home net. Using "wget -c", mileages
vary, but the per-session volume is below 200kB, which makes it
tiresome to download a 200MB archive.
Also, the mirror can't be choosen so randomly, since I _always_
end up at fau.de.

Since the introduction new mirror.ppa.trinitydesktop.org this server uses the
redirector based on the Debian's redirector. Selecting the mirror now not
random, but primarily based on GeoIP location.
I noticed, page mirrorstatus you have already found. For information
redirector on mirror.ppa.trinitydesktop.org uses precisely this information
as a main list of active mirrors.

suitable for use. To create packages for various distributions files are to
found in the tde-packaging GIT repository.

That's certainly a hint, but a problem with GITs is usually that
you find what you want/need only if you the GIT already. They're
not overly verbose, and looking at its front page, it's hard to
find information what else is in the branch called "master",
when the only comment about it is the latest commit message.
You who are always working with and on the GIT, will probably know
what is what --- I don't.
A more speaking example: the r14.0.x branch... what is it supposed
to cover? 14.0.1 and 14.0.2? And where has the deprecated dependency
been removed? All (sub)versions or the latest?
Don't misunderstand, I don't expect answers to these questions, as
this is not my current concern; I'm just saying, it's not easy to
find what I need.
Same with the tags section: what are these *.zip and *.tar.gz files
about? Are those the whole sources? Or just utility scripts? Or
maybe even meta data used for packaging? GIT is noncomittal in this
respect, too, in that it doesn't tell the file sizes, so I could
try my talent for educated guesses ;-)
wget -S only tells me "Length: unspecified [application/x-gzip]",
so no help via classic http, too. And I don't currently have the
bandwidth to simply download everything (my *core.tar download,
which is stable from the sweden mirror, is still at 45% after 5h ;-).
Also the "tree" tab doesn't reveal much to me. My actual target,
slackware, is empty except a .gitignore file, but also looking at
others, like suse, I continue lacking any idea about what the files
might be for (I've seen a lot of *.diff files, but diffs for what?)
(Again: purely rhetorical questions)
Some more info in pure HTML format would be appreciated, and I guess
not only from my side, but that's not the actual point of this post.
Anyway, I'll try to find my way in the hope that the ambiguities
regarding the build methods (which were those? iirc, cmake and
autoconf? --- Well, I'll see) have been removed meanwhile.

The Konstruct page was part of a mass-port of KDE3 documentation
from the KDE wiki, so that it wouldn't be lost if they finally decided to
purge it. Much of it still has value (design and specification information
about the original code), but I believe that page was obsolete when I
copied it in. I think there had been some interest at one time in reviving
Konstruct, which was why I included it.
So that's why the timestamp is relatively recent (and why it's clearly
marked as "KDE 3.5" and not "TDE").
