Hello all,
I have a strange problem, that was not there a dew days ago, although I could not say exactly when (or why and how) it appeared:
When I plug a CF card in my card reader, an icon appears on the desktop when I _mount_ the card (by clicking on it), a Konqueror windows opens BUT the icon disappears - which means I can't umount it with the mouse, I have to open a console and umount by hand.
Of course I have checked that "Mounted removable medium" was selected to be displayed. It is. The only thing I changed recently was to set the Desktop Background to a slide show.
I could not find in which file these settings are kept. Maybe someone has an idea what's going on? R 14.0.0 by the way.

I have no solution for you main issue, but there are at least two ways to unmount from a Konqueror window. Since I always have the navigation panel showing (I wouldn't know what to do without it), I open the Services menu (red flag icon) > Storage Media and safely remove (or unmount) from there. You can also Go (top menu) > Storage Media.

...The Safely Remove and Unmount options are in the drive's right click menu

Thanks for the hint Dave. I never have this panel showing (always hated this explorer-like thing), I love Konqueror because of the so effective two pane mode (Dolphin uses a much more stupid way that does not let you save the opening places).
This being said, F9 and I open it, so yes it's faster than konsole, mount and possibly su before umount.
I have made some more testing and it seems that everything works fine for USB keys. However, when inserting a card in the USB card reader, the _unmounted_ card is shown on the desktop. Once mounted it disappears, and comes back once unmounted. Maybe this is a bug? I don't have another card reader to see if it might be specific to this hardware...

I've never felt the need for another file pane when I have a directory tree pane (navigation panel) that I can drag and drop to... It's like tabbed browsing in that you can tab between multiple local and remote pages (a specific/remembered location in each tree)... How do you even navigate the file tree without the navigation panel (e.g. attached)?

Yep, everyone uses what he's used to. I started using computers with GEM and forever was tied to dual panes :). As to navigating without the navigation panel, I use the arrows on the upper left corner (see image).
I like to see where I'm dropping my files :)

... or another tab to drag and drop to. Something I find really handy is dragging a file (or a tab if the pane is an open file, e.g. an image) to a tab and holding the mouse there until the tab opens and I can drop it (e.g. as a webmail attachment).

I imagine a lot of us use TDE because it can provide what we are comfortable with/used to... I cannot remember that far back, but it looks like I also started with GEM (my first PC was an Amstrad).
I, too, have noticed that some external drives show up on the desktop, others not. I have two 1TB backup drives, both formatted in exFat. One shows up when mounted, the other doesn't. When unmounted, both show up.
Most of the USB drives show up, just not all. Which is strange.
They are available in the device manager view of Konqueror, and there's always "unmount".
Its the variety that makes life spicy. If everything always did what you expected, where would the fun be?

I still have one on a shelf - 10 MHz processor and 20MB Seagate :)

This looks like something I experienced with cell phone card memory
https://bugs.trinitydesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2444
Perhaps it helps at least find where you can solve it

Thanks Deloptes for the suggestion. I tried both settings as well as only the second, but nothing changes.
As I said mounting is no problem. The problem is (probably) related to _how_ the cards are seen.

Well, yes, I think I did some updates - did not include Trinity as version is still 14.0.0.
What I can say for now:
I plug in a USB key - An icon appears on the desktop, mousing over says "unmounted removable medium".
A pop-up windows also asks me what I want to do with it.
If I click on the icon, it gets mounted, the icon adds a little green mark but mousing over still says "unmounted removable medium"
Right clicking on the icon offers umount option, but it does not work (the usb key remains mounted). "Safely remove" does work - the key gets unmounted and the icon disappears.
I plug a CF or SD card in my USB card reader (Kingston FCR-HS3). Same window pop up and same icon (so a USB key icon) appear. If I click on the icon, the card gets mounted (media:/sdc1) and the icon disappears. "Unmount" from either the navigation panel or a konqueror window on media:/ unmounts correctly and the "unmounted removable media" icon reappears.
I've tried to setup fixed mounting points but "create new - Link to device" creates non working icons on the desktop (the content of these desktop files seem OK but they are treated as text files).
