Ignore my question, in hindsight the answer is both obvious and correct. TDE is installed to /opt, which is not in the $PATH by default.

KMail 1.9 is a TDE program so run it from TDE which knows exactly how to find it without messing with aliases and stuff.

Simply add
export PATH=".:/opt/trinity/bin:$PATH"
to your .bashrc file.
