OK I've now got more time on my hands (university is nearly finished for about a month) and I want to catch up on things such as translating. I asked ages ago about how I get to translate TDE into en_AU (Australian English) but never did find out (I'm assuming because R14 was under heavy development) so I'm asking again and if at all possible would love to get into it sometime next week.
So if anyone has advice or knows what I need to do feel free to let me know what I personally need to do to be able to start translating TDE into en_AU (and maybe encourage my friends across the Tasman to do likewise for en_NZ and maybe even Maori).
Cheers. Michael.

Translations for TDE are still a bit of a complex area; I have been wanting to overhaul the translation process for quite some time but am still waiting for the requisite features to be added to the upstream Launchpad project. I have tenative word that those features will be coming in the first half of this year (2015) so hopefully we'll be able to upgrade and hammer out a proper translation procedure later this year.
In the meantime, the best you can do is to check out the tde-i18n module from GIT (it's large, so you will need a fast connection for the initial download) and edit the appropriate .po files with kbabel or a similar tool.
Adding a new language currently requires someone with GIT commit access (such as myself, Slavek Banko, or Michele Calgaro) to create the appropriate template directory within that module, then run an i18n update to generate a set of template po files. Where things get complex (and why we need an overhaul) is that every time the i18n update is run any changes not already merged into the tde-i18n module become difficult or impossible to merge after the update. As a result, the current mantra for the tde-i18n module is to pull before you start translating and to commit early, commit often. ;-)
So if anyone has advice or knows what I need to do feel free to let me know what I personally need to do to be able to start translating TDE into en_AU (and maybe encourage my friends across the Tasman to do likewise for en_NZ and maybe even Maori).
Sounds great; always happy to have new translators on board!
Thanks Timothy, downloading now and will at least get a start on it. Will reply here again when I have the files translated and we can then go from there.
Cheers. Michael.

Hello I'm also asking about translation technical details. The thing is in TDE R14, which added new useful options but also overflown my "pi***ing-off" limit of English captions in Polish language environment. So I decided to do something with it in my free time, at least in tdebase, and grabbed tde-i18n with Git (over 1GB), then deleted everything except tde-i18n-pl folder. Now I have PO files which I can mess with KBabel. And I have two questions about translations: 1. I'm looking in "fuzzy" or missing translations (Uncertain or missing translations in KBabel). If they're missing, the thing is simple, complete it. But sometimes the translation is marked "fuzzy" and looks wrong. Example: Line 1199 in https://git.trinitydesktop.org/cgit/tde-i18n/tree/tde-i18n-pl/messages/tdeba... English: "Allows you to choose a different icon for the TDE menu." Polish: "Allows to choose background for TDE menu." What to do, correct it? 2. What to do with "&" captions? Use the same letter if is present in message?

Overwrite the incorrect Polish translation with the correctly translated string.
- What to do with "&" captions? Use the same letter if is present in
message?
The letter immediately following the "&" sets the preferred keyboard accelerator. Typically you would keep the accelerator in the same location, excepting cases where the destination language is different enough that keeping the accelerator in that same location would cause the keyboard shortcut to either make no sense or be completely non-unique.
A friendly reminder to all translators: be sure to submit your changes for merge as quickly as possible; if the GIT tree changes (no plans for this for the next month or two) we won't be able to easily merge your updated translations.
Thanks!
Tim
Um I must have downloaded the incorrect tar because the one I downloaded is 302MB. It was really slow as well. This is the one I downloaded https://git.trinitydesktop.org/cgit/tde-i18n/snapshot/r14.0.0.tar.gz
Is there a particular reason why the accelerator is & in TDE? Other projects I translate use _. I've done 6 files so far but I want to get an assignment out of the way today before I do anymore.
Cheers. Michael.

You downloaded a snapshot without history. That's OK for now, but had we changed anything in the tde-i18n GIT module since R14 release it would have been a problem.

Qt (including Qt 5 AFAIK) does it that way. Other projects, typically Gnome-related projects, use the underscore.
Tim
Ok I'll keep working with the one I have then. Cheers.

Hello Now another questions: https://git.trinitydesktop.org/cgit/tde-i18n/tree/tde-i18n-pl/messages/tdegr... Line e.g. 187. The same thing is in KPovModeler. Is this Qt:: for some purpose or just accident with "Replace all"?
Is there any way to test PO files in running TDE to check will all translated descriptions fit labels (especially tooltips)?

Hmm, good bug - this would probably be appropriate to fix in bulk all such files in all languages.
To test updated translation you can simply use: "msgfmt -o file.po file.mo" and then copy "file.mo" to /opt/trintity/share/locale/_lang_/LC_MESSAGES/.

That was an accident with "Replace all". If you see anything like that please add it to this Etherpad: http://trinity.etherpad.trinitydesktop.org/88
Ordinarily I would fix the codebase immediately but that would break import of the translations being worked on by you and Michael so we'll just queue up the fixes in that Etherpad until all translations have been merged.

It's a collaborative document editor. I went ahead and added those lines; I assume the capitalisation of QT was supposed to be Qt?
Thanks!

The document is not editable by me using Iceweasel (it isn't even visible w/ Konqueror, no surprise there).

Yes, my bad, Qt.

Are you visualizing the etherpad as a general public user or as a registered user? If you are visualizing as public user, that may be the reason why you can't edit the page.

? I have problems with Konqueror and have given up using it: it used to be my main browser, but it is now is painfully slow; but thought it must be something which had crept into my config files.

Hello I have a trouble locating few strings to translate. I'm talking about strings for example in Basket, in right-click tray pop-up menu, Paste and Quit items. Also Edit and Insert menu in main window. I've found that these menu items are generated using TDE/KDE functions. Should I try translating "tde.pot" or "qt-messages.pot" in tdelibs? Or is i18n of these not finished yet? MCbx
