I am running: Trinity 3.5.13 updated with Slavek's patches Squeeze LXDE installed and used when essential I have just run aptitude update. There were no upgrades. There were 2 yesterday.
My keyboard has disappeared in Trinity. There is obviously nothing wrong with the keyboard(s), both PS2 and USB, both of which I have tried, or the connection to the motherboard, since keyboards work in the BIOS, gdm and LXDE.
This situation is made worse for me by the fact that k*-trinity applications, with the exception of Konqueror, will not run in LXDE. There is no KWrite, and I do not find Nano a long term acceptable substitute, and I can run neither KMail nor Amarok. Not only are these applications not in the menu, they will not run in the console, with error message "command not found".
What have I done to upset Trinity?? And how do I persuade it to function for me again?? There is obviously a problem with my imported home. Other people for whom I have installed Trinity, but who had little or no previous data, have ridden off into the sunset. But what problem, where?

Lisi,
your problem with the keyboard reminds me that I once had a broken keyboard in Trinity 3.5.12 on the machine my parents. On a text console worked without problems. The KDM worked without problems, but after logging into their profile did not work.
Probably not comforted you - it was something in the profile. Although Trinity 3.5.12 used for more than a year, suddenly "something" happened and keyboard just did not work.
When I put away the profile and started with the new, the keyboard works. Gradually, I put back to profile important settings (kmail, kopete, bookmarks,...) and keyboard still works. Unfortunately, I did not go into such detail, and so I not find causes.
Note: Under LXDE TDE programs can not run, because TDE is not set in the system PATH. TDE into PATH usually adds startkde. Try:
export PATH=/opt/trinity/bin:$PATH export KDEDIR=/opt/trinity export KDEHOME=$HOME/.trinity
...and then run TDE programs.

Hi, Slávek!
I didn't see this until after I had replied to Julius's post. Did I say how much I dislike the Gmail interface? :-(
I shall certainly try both your suggestions. Thank you very much for them.

Hi, again, Slávek. :-)
I have tried the export PATH route, both as my user and as root. Still no joy.
I'm afraid I am not sure which files I have to delete or move in order to delete or move my profile. It is probably staring me in the face, but I have searched both online and on my box. Nada. There is none so blind as he will not see, but I still can't see. :-(
Thanks, Lisi

I have tried the export PATH route, both as my user and as root. Still no joy.
Still says "command not found"? That would mean that the PATH setting was not successful. Please check it in xterm (or terminal emulator, which is in xfce).

I progressed so that I whole ".trinity" put aside. After that I login with new Trinity profile and have tested that keyboard is in order. After then I logout, copied back to ".trinity" selected parts of settings (kmail, kopete, bookmarks, etc) and re-login. In the same way, I returned the next parts of the settings.
Thanks, Lisi

I tried adding these lines in ~/.bashrc :
PATH=/opt/trinity/bin:$PATH KDEDIR=/opt/trinity KDEHOME=$HOME/.trinity
(after relogin) No luck calling tde apps from a LXDE "run" box without full path (e.g. /opt/trinity/bin/kwrite)
When added also to ~/.profile - on relogin it worked without full path. Why I don't know, I thought .profile sourced .bashrc at login. Never mind, that does the job.
Maybe the same for /root e.g. for a text editor, not tried yet.
If you migrated a whole bulk of settings from another system any trouble is most likely config files not tde bug, setting up a new "test" user account will prove that

Is the user's shell bash or dash? I have in .profile:
#if [ -f ~/.bashrc ]; then # source ~/.bashrc #fi
In other words, .bashrc is not processed from .profile.

Snip from my (Squeeze original, as in /etc/skel) ~/.profile:
if [ -n "$BASH_VERSION" ]; then # include .bashrc if it exists if [ -f "$HOME/.bashrc" ]; then . "$HOME/.bashrc" fi fi
Should that read $HOME/.bashrc or have I missed something?

I don't need a test to prove that! it is certainly the case. I have seen my files! In fact, I had decided on a complete reinstall next week, and am relieved to find that merely deleting .trinity might work, for considerably less effort!
But I had not realised that these particular problems were due to that. Anyhow, if it were a bug, it is as likely in LXDE or Squeeze as in Trinity - and then there is always PEBKAC.
I really can't do much until next week, but I shall try your suggestions. I could do with access to my KMail before Gmail drives me totally insane.
Thanks, Lisi
