Hi Guys,
What do I have to do to stop "kate" from respawning ?
I've tried renaming all instances that I can find, even deleting them and it still keeps coming back.
Thanks:

You mean it starts by itself? Or you can't stop it?
I'm not a big fan of "kate" in itself if I'm not coding, but I never noticed this sort of behaviour.

I don't care for "kate" either. I am trying to get rid of it !
I originally went into Synaptic and tried to remove it from there, but it wanted to remove most of TDE. So I chickened out and tried to rename every instance that I could find to stop it opening up when ever I selected a text file. I also tried "open with" and "remember application". So I've now been round and deleted every instance that I can find, but it simply replaces the renamed or deleted files.

Is this new in r14.00? I have 3.10.13.2 and if I click on a text file it opens in KWrite - my preferred text editor. I may have set it in KControl some while ago under file associations.

Seems we'll need some of the wizards that make TDE. I thought maybe deleting or renaming the program would do - but after deleting /opt/trinity/bin/kate... I can still start kate!
I would guess parts of kate are integrated in konqueror (as it seems to be the default editor).
So removing kate seems at least very difficult. It is the default embeded editor (and there is no other editor proposed in the list in the ControlCenter. I can associate kedit with *.txt files, but kate remains the default embeded editor.
This may explain why it's difficult (impossible?) to remove, but I've never seen it respawning.

Konqueror > Settings > Configure Konqueroro > File Associations put "txt" into "File name pattern" expand "text" field; you'll see "plain"; click it
Now choose "Application Preference Order". You can move Kate down the lines to get rid of it.
Hope that helps Gerhard

The point is that Kate is not just "one program" but it is a collection of software pieces. There is the default editor which is used in KWrite, Kate and TDevelop, there is the main Kate application and then there is a Kate KPart as well, which is what you see for example embedded in Konqueror. You can delete the main KAte program but the Kate KPart is part of tdelibs and together with the editor it is deeply integrated in TDE. Best way to "not use Kate" is to change the default application for the various file types that are currently associated with Kate. Cheers Michele

Thanks Thierry, When I delete the "kate" directory in ".trinity/share/apps/" the next time I open "apps" it's back... Maybe respawning was the wrong word ?
Lisi, It's R14.0. I hadn't checked "KControl". But now you have pointed it out I will check there. Thanks.
Gerhard, Thanks for the instructions on changing its priority in "Application Preference Order" seems to work. At least it doesn't grab the "txt" files anymore.
Thanks all for your help, its appreciated.

R14.0 has TDEControl, 3.5.13.2 KControl. They are much the same. Not identical. KInfocenter seems to have been merged into TDEControl, having been missing in 3.5.13.2. Well, it is there, but has got nothing in it.

That has been my solution to getting rid of kate. I liked gedit, but it scrambled the contents of a file one too many times so I'm using geany now. A pretty face, less capable, but has yet to scramble a file just while changing one byte in it. Plugins are gradually appearing as coders scratch their own personal itches.
I think my distaste for kate probably starts with its default font selections. Ugly is being kind...
Thanks all for your help, its appreciated.
Cheers, Gene Heskett
I don't understand your issues with Kate - it has been my friend all the time and never let me down. It supports sessions, code highlighting, file history and many more useful features. If I want to read a simple text file I use Kedit - thus in konqueror kedit is first choice, but for scripting/code reading and making notes I prefer kedit.
I write this, so that there is one voice for Kate. Not that someone has the wrong impression of me or Kate.

plugins in kate are not mandatory

font is easy customizable. In fact I like the Monospace as it has fixed width for each char, so that the position is also fixed.

Actually I'm not "anti-kate". I've found it very usefull when coding (typically html or tcl). I never had issues with the fonts and kate allways did it's job very well.
The "feature" I dislike is the file list on the left. I've never liked these explorer-like setups (the first thing I do when setting up konqueror is to hide the "navigation panel"). It somehow disturbs me to see all the files that were edited before (I also switch off sessions). There are those who like to shutdown and come back where they were, I belong to those that let the system clean up after them and rejoice in finding a clean desktop at their return (I probably dream of having a household with lots of servants... )
Kate is usefull for special purposes (it does let you create files with unix, windows or macintosh end-of-lines too), but it's too "complicated" for simple editing (for me, kedit is enough) and not enough for real text writing where I use libreoffice.
So actually I felt the thread was more about how would it be possible to change the default editor in TDE :)
This is the strength of TDE: let it behave as _you_ want instead of learning to behave as the system wants.
Have a great day,
Thierry

IMO, this is not the spirit to use on TDE mailing lists, no offense. If you dislike a particular thing/program/feature, just do not use it. Comments like the one above sounds very rude. I would expect some like those on other ML, not on TDE's ML.

This is the right spirit ;-)

This is the strength of TDE and why we are using it :-)
By the way, for those who DO like and use Kate, in R14.1.x there will be a new session panel and new features (such as read only sessions) which will make really easy to switch between different scenarios. The work is still on going and far from being finished, so do not expect it too soon though ;-)
Cheers Michele

Yes this is what I needed.
I now think that I just went about doing this the wrong way ! Deleting stuff was my naive attempt at doing something by my self. In the end I learnt some things.
There is a bunch of good people on the "Trinity" lists. Thank you for your help

I've never seen "all the files that were edited before" in the navigation panel... The Documents tab contains a list of _open_ documents. If you're seeing documents left open in a previous session, you have "Load last-used session" enabled.
I really like the Filesystem Browser tab with its associated navigation buttons (up/back/forward/home), Bookmarks and load Current Document Folder functions. The Tab Bar Extension is also a must have (much handier than the documents tab when you're using the filesystem tab). I have not had any luck customizing the toolbars though (tab extension to blame?).

Toolbar customization is a little bit of a pain because of the structure of Kate. You can do some customization but do not have full control as in some other editors. The reason is that the toolbar displays a collection of toolbars: there is the main one, the KPart one and some others. They merge together at runtime following a somehow cumbersome logic and so for example it is not always possible to place a given button exactly were you want. Sometimes you need to compromise. Also note that in some cases you make a change to the toolbar buton order but nothing seems to happen. Then you close and reopen Kate and the order is now what you wanted (yes, there is already a bug open for this).
BTW, in case you have been using Kate Tab Bar extension for years, you may have missed that since a couple of years ago middle-clicking the button in the tab bar closes the document, which is quite handy when you get use to it ;-)
Cheers Michele

I seem to have been somewhat misunderstood. Sorry. I shouldn't try to make a jokes on an international list. If people didn't understand the reference to Alice in Wonderland, which was the point, I'll leave it there rather than make it worse. I have already caused problems by my attempt to explain it. The joke was the mad-hatters tea party. I wasn't casting aspersions on Kate.

Na, one should not take things like that so seriouse. Better to make a joke that some do not understand than bow to something like "code of conduct" as on the KDE forum :-)

I must admit it's a long time since I read Alice in Wonderland and then as a matter of fact not in English. I'll take a look - thank you Lisi for pointing to it :)

I am not sure if I understood this pretty well. Alice in Wonderland was not among my favorite books as a child and I couldn't catch up with it later. I'm now waiting for our daughter to grow up a bit, so that we can catch up together. I came later to the book when studing fantasy in literature, because I like all that things that could happen in our fantasy - like E.T.A Hoffman or the movie "Cool World". However I do not think anyone here took this seriously, but the thing is , I've read so many "anti-Kate" posts, that one could have the impression first thing to do after install trinity desktop should be to remove Kate :)
I could compare Kedit with Notepad.exe and Kate with Notepad++ in Windows.
It is also not about having more than nothing. It is about having right what you need - and Kate delivers this. This is like the repair shop. You need various tools to do the work ... not only a hammer, however in some cases a hammer is sufficient, in other cases it will not provide the desired quality and efficiency of work.
