how can one roll back to r13 in 64 bit debian wheezy? The "force" option in synaptic is not available. would "complete removal" of r14, then a switch to r13 repos and subsequent install work?

I use Debian Wheezy.
I have done that here. The Desktop Environment, X windows system are applications installed on top of a base system, all removeable.
Some of the tools available, imho, more usefull than synaptic. "aptitude, dselect"..package management from the command line...use the search and purge features.
'apt-cache search <text string>' , 'apt-get purge <text string>', 'apt-get autoremove', search 'trinity, tqt3', remove leftovers in /etc and /opt.
To get a clean base + X system takes some time, weigh that against re-install.

I managed to revert a Wheezy install. It took a little work and care but it apt-get and aptitude worked.
