How are you archiving? From the KMail command? (< sorta guessing this) Or
outside KMail through tar or whatnot?
If you use maildir: just upack it inside your
mail folder. Next time you
start kmail the mails are visible again. Don't know about mbox format
though ...
If your just trying to archive (save space through tar, etc.) but need to
be able to search the archives, then, while really old,
Glimpse/Glimpseindex would work. Explore the -z option of glimpseindex.

Ah! Very nice. I will have to build glimpse because it is not in any openSUSE
repositories, but its prerequisite, agrep is, and that looks very useful as well.
