Confirmation! kpdf no text, xpdf perfect.
Kind regards, Peter.
Yeah i have had something like that happen a few times. And some times when i print it looks like the document is redacted.
I just open them with Master PDF Editor. Its got some license fee but im happy to pay for something that does the same thing I use Acrobat Pro for. (I dont do much with Acrobat Pro.)

I have text in kpdf (Gentoo).
Checking the properties of the file, I wonder if your issue is that it couldn't find an acceptable substitute font on your system. On mine, it seems to be pulling in Times New Roman from the Microsoft corefonts package as a substitute for the Mac-typical Times font. I suspect Debian wouldn't make the MS fonts available in its main repository due to the license.
xpdf may just be less picky about font substitutions.

Ah, good point, I have (most) MS fonts installed.
Below are my (really old) notes. AFAIR you could also copy them to somewhere like /sys(?) /etc(?) such that every user had access to them.
Best, Michael
::Install Windows Fonts;;
Copy your Windows *.ttf (C:\Windows\Fonts) files to /home/user/.fonts folder.
or
apt-get install ttf-mscorefonts-installer (see 2nd Ref:, espcially on building font information cache files)

Debian bookworm (=testing = pre12), daily updated. Aptitude shows "no unmet dependencies". Kpdf 4:14.0.13~pre6-0debian12.0.0+1~b1. To make it more mysterious: I have a pdf-file one year old, that i have opened in the past flawlessly with kpdf. Just tried to open it yesterday: screen shows 3 blank pages! Reinstalled, without any! alterations whatsoever and anywhere, from a backup kpdf-trinity_4%3a14.0.13~pre6-0debian12.0.0+1~a_amd64.deb from june 22nd and voila, my old pdf is readable again. BUT your Voronoi-file still shows only formulas.

I haven't konqeror installed, mc does all what I need. But firefox shows all that abracadabra from your Voronoi, page 67 through 74:-)
Hope this helps to narrow down the search for the bug somewhere.
Kind regards, Peter.

Sorry to say, it does not matter if the fonts are installed or not. libpopplerkit0 provides all the fonts, but with or without it xpdf and konqueror preview show the text, kpdf does not.

You may recall that we discussed how to change the colors in kpdf? settings / configure / accessibility / change colors
What does kpdf do if you change these settings? i.e., you can force whatever colors you want, so maybe invisible characters can also be made to show themselves?

Oh, I totally forgot to test these. Well, no changes wahtever settings I choose in kpdf.
But there is another strange thing: I found that "dia" and "gimp" have problems with fonts, too. Gimp simply crashes with no meaningfull error ("ScriptFu error." - yeah, sure), when I try to change a text in "dia", all fonts (even the GUI menu) disappear or better become invisible, as the buttons and dialog items keep the correct size. The Errormessiage is in deed meaningful:
(dia:4223): Pango-WARNING **: 08:33:48.276: failed to create cairo scaled font, expect ugly output. the offending font is 'Bitstream Vera Sans 345593.26171875' (dia:4223): Pango-WARNING **: 08:33:48.276: font_face status is: error occurred in libfreetype (dia:4223): Pango-WARNING **: 08:33:48.276: scaled_font status is: error occurred in libfreetype
I don't understand why it tries to get a font of 345593.26171875 pt, but I could imagine that kpdf triggers the same error in libfreetype (libfreetype6:amd64 2.12.1+dfsg-3).

freetype-2.12.1, which supplies libfreetype.so.6.18.3. A check of the package manager's file bin turns up a patch file freetype-2.11.0-COLR_v1_clipbox.patch.xz, but I don't know whether it was applied here. Some flags offered by the package were turned off at build time.
I also have an unusual setting or two designed to clean up older fonts at the expense of newer ones, but I don't see how that would cause my version of the package to work when yours doesn't.

I have had such a thing happen, but only in a very specific way; and the details might actually be pertinent and help you. Then again, maybe not.
I create many, many, many pdfs, more or less on-the-fly. I create a print-ready pdf, but then I notice some little mistake, or a flaw in presentation, so I go back to LibreOffice and make changes, then save again as a pdf.
Sometimes when I open such a new document without first closing the old one, I see no text; usually I do see the graphics, but then these don't change so often. I have to make sure that I manually reload the new document, then text appears.
Like I said, it may not meaning anything for your own situation. Probably not many people will have a reason to create pdfs in this manner. I have tried to make this systematic and routine, if not quite automatic. I flip back and forth between the two screens, LibreOffice and kpdf, and slowly make it look like my imagined finished document.
So I wonder if you are somehow doing something like that, and you only need to reload the document.
Bill

Hi Nik,
I've had that problem too. Try navigating to the appropriate component of TDE in the left column and then selecting an existing issue and it will contain a NEW ISSUE button at top right that you can use.

I just wanted to add a bugreport according the missing/invisible fonts in kpdf on https://mirror.git.trinitydesktop.org/gitea/issues but I can't find a way to so. Hi Nik,
I've had that problem too. Try navigating to the appropriate component of TDE in the left column and then selecting an existing issue and it will contain a NEW ISSUE button at top right that you can use.

Hi both, Another way is also to use the "Report a bug" from a TDE application, which would bring you to the right component issue page automatically (or to the TGW logic page first, if needed). Cheers Michele

Might be a stupid question, but what package is the application in / how is it called?

Running the Bug Report Wizard generates a Gitea web page with the component info set to TDE/tdegraphics.

KPDF > Help > Report Bug/Request Enhancment
I say that blindly. I tried it with Kicker, doesn’t work..
- Submit Bug Report pop-up opens - Click ‘Launch Bug Report Wizard’ - A new window of Konqueror opens (every time) [1] - Redirects to login (even if you’ve already logged in) - Login goes okay - After login, it does NOT redirect back to the originally sent URL. - Ends up on a listing of apps page (e.g. not a page to submit a bug report)
[1] Pale Moon is my default browser, so Konqueror is hard coded somewhere????
I guess it helps just to identify what the app is called?
Confused, Michael

Yeah, no, doesn't even do that.
There is no "kicker" in
https://mirror.git.trinitydesktop.org/gitea/explore/repos
There is no "panel" either...
I'm blindly assuming the name of the thing that raises and lowers at the bottom of your screen (that shows what open programs you have) is called "panel."
So, powers that be, how do you file an enhancement request for it?
Thanks, Michael

Here with TDE under Debian Bullseye if I right-click on the panel and go through the bug reporting clicks it takes me to a template for a bug in the TDE/tdebase component with "kicker:" in the title.

Specifically, right-click on the panel, and the last line in the pop-up is Help >. Hover your cursor over that line and a submenu appears; the second entry is Report Bug/Request Enhancement.

Hi MIke, Leslie,
Aye, that's what I was doing. It was not making it to the TDE/tdebase template when:
TCC -> TDE Components -> Default Applications -> Web browser
is set to its default setting of:
"in an application based on the contents of the URL"
That default launches Konqueror (even though xdg shows palemoon *), which isn’t really a legitimate web browser anymore, so that’s why I was seeing it ‘broken.’
Basically Konqueror did it!
Thanks, Michael
* michael@local [~/data/trash]# xdg-settings get default-web-browser palemoon.desktop

Strange things have been happening lately when TDE components (e.g. KMail) open HTML links in documents. I use the Waterfox browser and have it set in my Control Center => TDE Components => Default Applications, merely as | in the following browser: | waterfox In the browser's settings I have selected |Open links in tabs instead of new windows and it used to open a new tab in the last Waterfox window that was active; but now it opens a new window instead. Very irritating.

How odd!
Here it's opening in a new tab in the last Waterfox window that was active, but I might have a different version of Waterfox as mine shows as:
waterfox-g3
in Default Applications and:
# waterfox-g3 --version Waterfox Ltd. Waterfox G3.2.0 (Third Generation Release)
Well it's also re-packaged by the MX team, and the Waterfox website seems to indicate there is now a 5th generation release.
Change and then re-apply your setting?
Best, Michael

Mine was waterfox-G4.1.5; just upgraded to waterfox-G5.0.1, and we'll see what it does.

Just tested it and it works fine here. I used both Konsole and kpdf for the test. Firefox opened to the login screen, I logged in and then I was shown the page with a new issue opened on the right component and just waiting for me to type in the details.
1) the browser that will be used is the one set in TCC -> TDE Components -> Default Applications -> Web browser. 2) the link is available in most TDE application in the Help menu 3) the component where to create an issue is automatically selected based on the application you are reporting from.
Cheers Michele

Yes, I've experienced a similar situation on a few occasions. Occasionally, when I print, the document appears as if certain portions have been intentionally obscured.
To address this, I typically utilize Master PDF Editor. While it requires a licensing fee, I'm willing to invest in it as it offers similar functionality to Acrobat Pro, which I don't use extensively on the https://dgbrefrigeration.com.au/
