I had an apparently working system, so I decided to take a deep breath, cross my fingers and install Slávek's patches. All appeared to go swimmingly. But now if I try to launch almost anything via Klauncher I get the message above.
Application names preceded by kdesu appear to launch without a problem.
Klauncher was working well before I installed the patches. Yes, daft, I know, not to leave well alone, when I had an operational system. But I fancied having the patches.
I work almost entirely via Klauncher. The fact that they have messed around with Klauncher is one of the many things I dislike about KDE4. Is there an easy solution? Or shall I just reinstall and stop at 3.5.13 without patches? :-(
I am NOT giving up. I have been pig-headed since I was a baby. It is bit late to change now.
Lisi
you've restarted kde after installing the patches?

I thought so, but I just rebooted, and the answer is obviously no. :-(( All is now well.
I shall be making myself use KDE4 as a punishment soon. I don't deserve decent software
Thanks, Nic. Lisi

A few days ago someone also solved the problem with klauncher. And helped restart Xserver.

These applications won't launch from the menu either, thus redering the computer almost totally useless.

This seems to apply to everything. But I can't run my main desktop launching all applications as root via Klauncher.
I thought taht I just edited sources.list, updated and installed. But itis probably PEBKAC again.
You lot are soon going to tell me of the joys of KDE4, just to get rid of me.

Have you tried launching them from the command line? Assuming you can get a terminal to open. Try
KDE Menu > Run Command > xterm
Some six months ago or so, I had something go wrong with my KDE 3.5.4 installation where I could not launch any KDE or Gnome applications. Basic XWindows apps would launch.
The cursor would change to the bouncing ball, bounce for a few seconds, then nothing. There were no obvious errors either printed to std out at the terminal, or logged. I didn't want to reboot, because I had some applications already running and didn't want to risk ending up with nothing at all.
Eventually I fixed it by renaming or deleting the dot-files in my home directory and letting them be recreated. I don't know which dot-file did the trick, but I think it may have been font related. Start with your .kde and .qt directories, then anything to do with fonts, and then work your way through everything else. Purely shell-related dot-files like .bashrc can be left alone.
I needed to reboot. :-(
Hopefully more sleep will reboot my brain!
