No idea if this is a feature request or what.
I'm dealing with an enormous directory that contains numerous subdirectories many of which contain subdirectories of their own, and so on. For some uses it would be very good to be able to tell at a glance which ones contain subdirectories. From the foggy distant past I remember some version of something wherein the icons changed color or had an asterisk or something when there were subdirectories present.
So.
Does anyone know of a file manager that has this feature? Or . . .
Is there perhaps an icon set that would enable this feature? Or . . .
Might this be added in some future release of TDE? Or . . .
Is it just plain impossible with the current state of things?

Konqueror shows a "+" sign at the start of the folder icon when a folder has subdirectories. That what you're looking for?
Sometimes you have to refresh (F5) to see them though, so someone else chiming in with a config option to force a refresh or something would also probably be helpful...

That's exactly what I'm looking for -- except that it doesn't show up in Konqueror on my machine. fwiw, I'm using the kdeclassin icon theme.

It would indeed!

Might have helped, but here in treeview there's a + in front of every directory that has any contents at all, not just subdirectories. -- dep

I can only guess you've got some setting/config different than mine, as mine doesn't show the + when a dir just has files... Here a pic, HTH...

Meanwhile, here -- note the Blackberry > SOUNDS directory. The + turns to a - when it's open, but when it's open I can *see* whether there are subdirectories. When it isn't open, it has the + but it has no subdirectories. -- dep

Yup, AFAICT different configs...
Notice that your right pane shows both folders and files as sub items of those folders, where my right pane only shows the contents of the selected directory.
My guess is since your right pane shows sub items, the left pane shows the +, as it is saying the right pane has more than one level?
Try switching your right pane to "Detailed List View"
Ah, another thing, your left pane is not the standard ('tree'?) view [edit: called "Navigation Panel"]. Notice my left pane does not have any "NNN Items - NN Files" type info at the bottom. See if you can grab and drag the very left most side of your Konqueror so it expands to show the 'tree' view pane?
Ohh!, also try clicking this:
Window > Hide Navigation Panel F9
Hopefully that'll do it?

No, it's just normal split view of the same thing; on the right I opened a directory to illustrate the phenomenon. I was using the only tree view I could find, which is found in the menu rendered when the view icon is invoked.

That did indeed make the little side panel appear. Weirdly, I cannot change the font on this panel, which at the moment is much smaller than brings me joy. (Though there's a configuration setting for typeface and size for Konqueror in file manager use in the Konqueror configuration under Settings, it applies only to the text under icons.)
Still, that will probably do -- thanks very much. -- dep

I once had an odd problem similar to yours in that it seemed unexplainably out of place. The reason was that I had configured a konqueror profile (which was only slightly different) and had it assigned as the default profile for konqueror. With every restart of konqueror the old phenomenon (I can't remember now anymore) was back. Even if this doesn't sound like your problem, konqueror profiles may be the source of it. Make sure you use default profile.

from experience I recommend create fresh/clean user and test. If it is possible to reproduce, it is TDE/konqueror issue, if not - it is user issue

Not my Konqueror; it just indicates if the folder has been expanded [-] or not [+].
Sometimes you have to refresh (F5) to see them though, so someone else chiming in with a config option to force a refresh or something would also probably be helpful...

I believe dep is trying to find out if a folder contains subfolders, regardless of whether or not it contains files.

I don't know the answer to exactly what you asked, but you may not need one if you give ncdu a try.

Thanks, but what I was hoping for was something that let me find out at a glance. I can of course learn whether a directory has subdirectories.
Explaining what I need it for might help: I have a directory containing well over 100,000 news photos I made over many years. They are sorted by story. A few years ago I thought it might help to make overarching directories containing similar stories. The process never got completed -- there were too many stories and too little time to devote to the project, and many stories defied categorization. So now I need a way to get a sense of which directories are single-story ones and which are just directories of stories, in a way that I can literally scroll and look for likely places a particular picture is hidden.
Something like Michael described, only it isn't working here so apparently a box is unticked somewhere. -- dep

What you want to know is if a subdirectory contains another subdirectory, regardless of whether or not it contains files? Konqueror's tree view won't help; the + beside the unexpanded directory merely tells that it contains "something". I don't know of a graphic tool to show this.
