For example if you installed the .bz2 from mozilla.org, there all files related to both firefox and thunderbird reside under the directory you unzipped them to. There is nothing to tell TDE "Hey, there are new apps for your menu here..." If on the other hand, you installed packages provided by your distribution, they should have included proper .desktop files within the proper search path structure so TDE can say "Hey, look, I have new apps to add to my menu..." So you are yelling about something completely out of TDE's control. If you installed from mozilla.org, then open kmenuedit (or tmenuedit) and create an entry from FF and TB. If you installed a package from your distro, the search the package content for .desktop files and drop a note on your distro mailing list if they are not there.
