I'm back again -- both with a new list subscription and my ongoing Trinity install attempt.
Ive added the PPAs for my Ubuntu 24.04 and did the agt-get install without seeing any errors. I did the dpkg-reconfigure tdm-trinity with the following output:
jonesy@nix6:~$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure tdm-trinity Upstart is not active - masking initctl Adding 'local diversion of /sbin/initctl to /sbin/initctl.distrib' Removing 'local diversion of /sbin/initctl to /sbin/initctl.distrib' jonesy@nix6:~$
.. which means nothing to me. ???
Anyway, when I reboot, I am presented with a login screen whose background claims
"kubuntu" "Powered by Trinity"
huh??? kunbuntu?
So, I complete the login, and I AM PRESENTED WITH THE GNOME DESKTOP.
No doubt it's a snafu on my part. But where do I start looking?
Thanks in advance! Jonesy

Hi New Jonesey,
You can have multiple desktops installed.
A login manager such as TDM allows you to select which desktop to use when starting a new session. In TDM this is done via the menu button at bottom right of the TDM login dialog box.
If you don't need or want multiple desktops installed it would simplify your future life to remove those you don't need, although removing an unwanted desktop is nowhere near as easy as not installing it in the first place.

Hi New Jonesey,
:-) Hardly new! I've been with trinity since kde 3.5 was phased out. But I move slow. I spent years on ubunbtu 12.04 until moving up to 16.04. With this new PC, I am just now moving off 16.04 to 24.04 -- where I'll probably still be when it comes time for the unix epoch rollover (unless I roll over first.)

Crap! Another "dooh!!" moment for me.
I knew about multiple desktops, but my error was in believing simply running dpkg-reconfigure would 'lock in' trinity as my desktop. The last time I ran dpkg-reconfigure was over 8 years ago. :-)

Yeah. This is a pre-built-with-ubuntu-installed PC which I hastened to acquire before my ubuntu 16.04 went totally toes up.
I may look into removing gnome after getting my brand new TDE environment set up like I want (which involves remembering how I futzed with my old PC over the last 8 years. I'm at that stage in life where 'remembering' can be problematic.)
Thank you for your prompt replies over the last several days. Hopefully I will be causing less noise from now on.
