To the hardworking Devs and ISO-builders, Please, that's pretty please with sugar on top, can we have hybrid .ISOs for the expected new batch of live CDs/DVDs with TDE R14.0.2?? My reasons for asking .... 1. Many modern PCs and most laptop/netbooks do not have an optical drive. 2. I know there are utilities for writing an ISO to a USB-stick but they are not particularly user-friendly. eg. unetbootin is a total PITA. Besides a simple "sudo dd if=path-to-hybrid of=/dev/usb-stick" is trivial and works as expected. 3. Boot and run from a USB-stick is much faster than any CD/DVD so demonstrating to potential new adopters is a better experience.
Thanks in antic, Glen

Do you have a link to how to build the hybrid images (from the command line is preferred)? I haven't looked into that technology as I tend to build live USB images with unetbootin.
Thanks!

Hi Tim!
This might be a pointer to the right direction (but I never used it): http://www.syslinux.org/wiki/index.php/Isohybrid

For Debian you can use Debian Live (1) (which is currently undergoing transformation) to build regular live images or iso-hybrid images. With Debian Live I recommend actually installing it (live-build) onto your machine and building the live images on your own machines. The build service is going to be shut down (probably today or tomorrow). I, personally, use Debian Live to build my iso-hybrid images the only issue is it doesn't, yet, work with UEFI but that is being worked on as we speak.
You could also use Refracta (2). I've never used it so I can't comment on its usefulness.

https://www.turnkeylinux.org/blog/iso2usb works for me when using an up-to-date distro. Required packages not available on my "production" boxes. :-( Cheers, Glen

I'm in my script simply run on final iso file: isohybrid $TREE/../tde-$TDE-ubuntu-$UBUNTU-desktop-$ARCH.iso

This sounds like the easiest solution; I'll look into activating this on the CD builder.
Thanks all!

This has now been enabled on the nightly build LiveCDs, and will be part of the next TDE release. As a reminder, nightly builds, embedded system images, and nightly LiveCDs are available exclusively to developers and financial supporters of the TDE project.
Thanks,
Tim

Hi all,
Just want to say that now you can buy on ebay an external USB DVD drive-burner for 15-20$. As a long-time Asus EEE user, I found it to be really useful. But, it is true that LiveCD are sometimes painfully slow to use on real CD drive.
While UnetBootIn does not work always on first try, I have yet to see it fail completely. I see that if I don't use the computer at all while UnetBootIn works, I get better results, but the same goes for dd too.
Have a great day! -Alexandre

Great, when they work. not everything will boot from them.

To be fair, the one I had trouble with most recently won't boot from a USB key either. :-(

The problem laptop would boot from an expensive powered USB optical drive, and a USB hard drive.

Hi Lisi,
Almost everything will boot from external USB dvd drive, except maybe if you're talking about launching a Win 98 install, or old Debian. The problem you're seeing is when the USB ports of the computer can't supply enough power by itself to make the drive work properly. Nowadays, most drives can work properly with either 1 USB port, or by adding (included with the drive) a second USB plug to supply more power to the drive.
Have a great day! -Alexandre

Not in this case. The BIOS wouldn't wait for something to be read. It could only read off something that was already available before the BIOS looked for it. So the CD/DVD had to have been spun up in advance of the laptop's being turned on, which meant that it had to be separately powered. A solid state hard drive does not have to spin up and can be read immediately.
