Hi there.
Thanks to the previous post re "Icons on task bar" I took a look at
.trinity/share/apps/kickerrc, one more time to track down the source of
that annoying little '*'.
It's in the system tray, but I can't find the systemtrayapplet.desktop
file to examine what app it belongs to, so I can remove it.
It's the little orange circle between the calender icon and the network
icon.
Any hints?

It was gnome-settings-daemon I'd put a link to in the AutoStart
folder.
After moving my mouse to a single pixel it reported the battery status
in black as a tool tip, so I guess it's some kind of system status
applet, horribly shrunk down to near-zero size.
One time there was a little blue '*' to the right of the orange one.
I hope this helps someone else!
