I can't figure out if this is just another word for 'reboot' or does it have other consequences? googling yields no clear (or trustworthy) answer.
it's an Asus Zenbook with Windows 10 Home; BIOS is American Megatrends version 300.
No answer about "platform reset" maybe I simply do not remember but - I have installed Linux Mint / Mate (including Trinity) on two Asus Zenbooks without a problem. The last was a Zenbook Flip of a friend.
thank you and William and Nikolaus for help.
I have Debian/Trinity installed on a Zenbook UX330 which is why I thought it safe to attempt it on this Zenbook UX433FAC-A5348T but my attempts have failed.
the installer craps out and sends me to the commandline. I have tried with Debian Live and netinst, 4Q0S live and Devuan ASCII netinst.
I did disable Secure Boot without disastrous consequences, that is, the native Windows Home still boots, etc.
I do not want to do too much 'surgery' since it is fresh bought and I can return it if it's not too far from default state.
I wanted to boot up Linux, look around and then determine my install strategy. I may be plotting my return strategy instead.
not sure how to diagnose. I see an error as follows: 'please fix 'fbdev' driver. fbdev didn't call xf86SetGamma to initialise'. no idea how to fix it.
Gerhard, Nikolaus, how do you get '|' on a German keyboard? I can't do a 'dmesg | less' without it. (actually the keyboard is German but I suppose the key setup is American.)

<altgr>+"<" - "altgr"is right of space, "<" is left of "Y" - at least on keyboards.
@fbdev: most likely your graphic card is not supported. You might try MX Linux and/or Arch and see how far that'll thke you. Most likely you will not be happy at the end of the day.

thank you.
the Mediamarkt site calls it "Intel UHD Grafik 620"; I also think I'll have problems with wi-fi - can't find my note about it but it was something like "intel wifi ax200."
I'll give it a shot with MX then failing that, take it back to the store.
Windows 10 Home has become pretty bad. it will try to force you to use a Microsoft Store Account if it detects internet. and the amount of personal information it helpfully solicits unless you turn off the (many) defaults is overwhelming.

Maybe you could try booting Deepin just to see. It's Debian based but usually rather cutting edge.
If you have very high resolution you'll probably end up with toubles setting up TDE (I remember this with some chinese Chuwi stuff).

I gave Linux Mint a try and that got me a bit further.
I got a nice Mint logo, in brilliant green, before it crashed to the command line.
at the command line I have use of all utilities, for instance I do a 'dmesg' and get a ton of information.
I can't do the '|' thing because I think the keyboard mapping is American. I need to switch to German mapping.
it doesn't see wifi though it caught the wifi in my wifi-dongle, a usb device with an antenna, TP-link TL-WN722N.
so essentially Mint boots to the command line but can't do the DE. it provides nice clear fonts (in color) and even showed the Mint logo.
how do I get keyboard layout to match up? I did
sudo dpkg-reconfigure locales
and chose one of the German locales.
using the following provides no guidance; I need a generic German keyboard.
sudo dpkg-reconfigure keyboard-configuration
I'm a bit encouraged by Mint but likely the machine goes back to the store. I couldn't get Deepin. I'll try MX.

Here's a crazy thought. Why not choose German - DE when installing, when asked to choose language? (I am thinking of the Devuan netinstall version, which is old-school Debian.)
Then maybe you can deal with adding or changing language later. I am assuming that you read or speak German well enough for this. At least then you'll see if you have that character available, and if you can advance farther in the installation process.
There are some keyboard mapping tricks you can do within Trinity (and probably other DEs, too), but you have to get it installed first.

here's the problem or two: I don't mind choosing German but I am hesitant to install because I may return the computer. I have to be careful that Windows gets to set itself back to default in case I give up and want to return it.
and the Live boot didn't give me a language option (unless I overlooked it). must be some boot tricks I can try but right now I'm going to look at MX.
Mint almost does the trick but again with installing, I may not get a driver for the wifi and may not get a way to set up the Desktop.... a lot of uncertainties.

I normally search for the American keyboard layout (e.g. Wikipedia) and lookup the keys. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_and_American_keyboards

yeah, that's the problem.
however I got my '|'!
I've booted to MX, specifically MX-19.2_ahs_x64.iso.
it crashes out of the DE to the command line or rather stalls on F7 but you get a command line at F1. the alt-gr+> trick works!
I think it's detected wi-fi! iwconfig yields some output for wlan0. ah, 'nmcli device wifi list' shows various SSIDs!
'inxi -G' doesn't say much.
so that's brought me far. in principle I could install a command-line only system.
not sure how much more I want to struggle but maybe I can get a DE working.

well, we do actually, but not in this case - I GOT A DESKTOP!
I booted MX again; it's got a funny text-based options window - you can select language etc. that helps.
but on the kernel parameter line I tried
amdgui.dc=0
which is a little ditty I found last night actually but lost track of.
now it's started a DE, seems to be some kind of xfce.
I'm going to try the little ditty on a Debian Live usb. the kernel on this version of MX is:
Linux mx1 5.6.0-2-amd64
it's Buster of course.
resolution looks fine btw.

I run TDE on MX, it works well, even supports Nvidia drivers. The TDE wiki instructions are one release old, on my to do list to update (after I install the current MX version, so don't hold your breath...).

That may have been me, this is what I use (from a Debian derivative). Basically put everything in simple shell scripts and copy it to the install media so you’re not having to type everything from memory. Really useful to add your bin dir and anything else you regularly use from the command line. Hack and slash as needed.

No, I know definitely that I heard about it first from Felix, so I wanted to give props where they were due. However, all contributors are welcome, especially if they have solutions or handy tricks or workarounds.
Your scripts sound like just the thing, Michael, and I want to incorporate something like this into my own process, because it takes me at least 5-6 hours to do a complete installation of Devuan netinstall and TDE, enough to get it up and functioning so that I can resume my *actual* work, rather than watching my life ebb away while I wait for packages to download; and if I mess up one of the steps, it can take a couple days to get back to my own version of "normal" -- so yeah, I'm interested in this topic, so that I can streamline this part of it.
When I find a suitable laptop, I intend to follow in Felmon's footsteps, more or less, except that I won't walk so straight a line to get there. Once I have something like a test machine, where I can experiment and not worry about disasters, I want to create a Devuan netinstall CD with TDE repositories added; for now, though, this ranks too low for me to consider.

menuentry "Install openSUSE TW via HTTP" { search --no-floppy --label --set=root p03 linuxefi /stw/linux showopts install=http://download.opensuse.org/tumbleweed/repo/oss hostname=myhost hostip=192.168.###.###/24 gateway=192.168.###.### nameserver=8.8.8.8 net.ifnames=0 kexec_reboot=0 initrdefi /stw/initrd } menuentry "Install Buntu via HTTP" { search --no-floppy --label --set=root p03 linuxefi /buntu/linux showopts vga=791 --- net.ifnames=0 netcfg/get_hostname=myhost netcfg/get_domain=my.domain netcfg/disable_autoconfig=true netcfg/get_ipaddress=192.168.###.###/24 netcfg/get_gateway=192.168.###.### netcfg/get_nameservers=8.8.4.4 netcfg/confirm_static=true tasks=standard base-installer/install-recommends=false initrdefi /buntu/initrd.gz } menuentry "Install Debian via HTTP" { search --no-floppy --label --set=root p03 linuxefi /deb10/linux showopts vga=791 --- net.ifnames=0 netcfg/get_hostname=myhost netcfg/get_domain=my.domain netcfg/disable_autoconfig=true netcfg/get_ipaddress=192.168.###.###/24 netcfg/get_gateway=192.168.###.### netcfg/get_nameservers=8.8.4.4 netcfg/confirm_static=true tasks=standard base-installer/install-recommends=false initrdefi /deb10/initrd.gz }
Ordinary installation media works too, but all that manual typing to edit the loader line each time is a lot more work than selecting from a Grub menu. Since I partition and format in advance, it's simple to save the installation kernel and initrd for this use. e.g. for Buster:
wget http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/dists/buster/main/installer-amd64/current/im... wget http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/dists/buster/main/installer-amd64/current/im...
Once the minimal installation is complete and booting, I finish by following instructions in the wiki, in particular:
"NOTE: tde-trinity package is a comprehensive meta-package. To install a minimalist environment, replace tde-trinity with tdebase-trinity in the instructions below."
e.g. for Debian: sudo apt-get update sudo apt install tdebase-trinity tdebase-tdm

That may have been me, this is what I use (from a Debian derivative). Basically put everything in simple shell scripts and copy it to the install media so you’re not having to type everything from memory. I told everybody it was true, Felix, but they didn't believe me.
;-)
Thanks for the quick how-to guide.

it is actually called tdm-trinity and tdebase-trinity + tdm-trinity will give you minimalistic TDE.

The correct names depend on the distro. In some, trinity or tdebase or tde is the first string. In others, it's the last string, a frustrating inconsistency for those who multiboot different distro families.

'inxi -G' doesn't say much.
-Gxx says more
-SGxxIza still more, because it shows kernel cmdline options that can affect whether or not X works - without having to examine Xorg.0.log.
But, G* can only do all it's capable of from a running X session terminal, depending on various X utilities to gather the desired info.
BTW, whatever $SUBJECT means, it's not something I've ever encountered or had use for. Thus I didn't touch the thread until a keyword was added to it.

does look useful though I was dropped to a Grub shell so not sure how many resources would be available to it.
