maybe I have good news for you! I have prepared small patch for tdelibs. In my tests this patch successfully prevents dead-lock in kdesktop. See:

Updated packages containing proposed patch is already included in the preliminary-stable-builds. So, update, test and report the results!

Works ... but the issue disappered 3 days ago, when I installed hal:
# apt-cache search hal doesn't show any "hal".

I did too after installing Slávek's patch, as it has worked for me so far. When I discovered the problem I thought that it would be the end of civilization as we knew it. Thanks to Slávek civilization has survived.
