Moin,
a friend asked me for some (older) notebooks for people who fled from ukraine. So my point is: i would install ubuntu with tde if there is support for ukrainian language.

Are you or your friend willing to do the same for refugees from Africa or Syria? Or mayby - god forbid - Russia?
Nik

Nik, be careful the mob does not have any idea what it is doing and as we have already communist style conditions in the west, I am concern about you.
On top the word hypocrisy is not well known, but on the other hand if they can help the people in need, let them help.
As far as it shows it is 91% translated. What I do not get is why Ukraine is listed as UK and not UA

Basic language codes are ISO standard - see: https://www.loc.gov/standards/iso639-2/php/code_list.php
This is due to the fact that states and languages may not always be in binding 1:1. For example, Brazilian Portuguese. Therefore, language codes are not strictly bound to state codes. The entire language code then is a combination of language and state code - such as uk_UA, pt_BR.
Cheers

Nik, sorry, but your answer was not given to the question asked, but it was just an allusion on a political topic that is not the subject of this mailing list, regardless of the fact that it is now noticeably affecting our lives and probably will be for a long time.
Unfortunately I do not know the languages that use migrants from areas that you mentioned, but for example, the state of translations of Arabic is not good:
https://mirror.git.trinitydesktop.org/weblate/languages/ar/
If you know any migrants from such areas who want to educate and work and notebooks for them would be beneficial, you can look at the status of translations for their languages:

I don't believe that Nikolaus meant that remark as irony.
The West's reaction to Ukraine is deeply hypocritical and racist, and deeply, deeply dangerous, risking nuclear war for the sake of US interests.
For 20 years or more the West has stood by and accepted the USA bombing, drone-assassinating, and outright unprovoked invasion of countries populated by brown- and black-skinned people, mostly Muslim, and done nothing. US aggression double-plus good.
Why was the USA not banned from the SWIFT banking system after their unprovoked invasion and occupation of Iraq and their continuing bombing and drone-assassination campaigns in Africa and the Middle East?
At the same time that the US was hypocritically condemning Russia, they were bombing Somalia:
https://www.commondreams.org/news/2022/02/25/us-bombed-somalia-amid-russian-...
But that's okay, because they're only blacks. (Sarcasm.)
Why haven't American oligarchs like Jeff Bezos had their assets seized? They are every bit as responsible for American state actions as Russian ologarchs are responsible for Russian state actions.
For the white Ukrainians, Europe and America is full of bleeding hearts.
But for the black and brown Muslims being bombed by US missiles and drones, their countries destroyed, the victims of brutal authoritarian regimes being protected, armed and trained by the US, they have nothing but hearts of stone.
It is hypocracy and double-standards.
Even just a few weeks ago, everyone knew that Ukraine's deep connections to literal Nazis was a serious problem. Now its "fake news" because their Nazi connection is inconvenient for US propaganda.

To say nothing of more recent missile attacks against civilian targets in Donetsk.
Make no mistake: Ukraine is the willing catspaw of the US in their slow-motion war on Russia, they are not innocent victims of aggression. This has been building for six years, since the popularly-elected Ukrainian government was overthrown by the far-right.

I support the right of all nations to defend themselves, not just the USA, even preemptive defence when negotiations have failed.
I support a negotiated peace that guarantees the security of both Russia and Ukraine.
I support the permanent neutrality of Ukraine.
I support the removal of Nazis from the government, military and police of Ukraine, especially the notorious Azov Battalion.
I support the independence of Donetsk and Luhansk.

Steve, your answer is completely outside the conference topic. I won't comment on your individual opinions, but if you want to continue with this topic, I will be forced to give you a ban. This will not express my disagreement with your opinions, but the emphasis on the fact that these topics are not and will not be subject to this mailing list.
At the same time, I warn all others not to continue this topic, no matter how big your disagreement with the present opinions.
Cheers

Hi Michael,
according to the state of translations to Ukrainian, it seems to be at a very good level. The biggest contribution to the good state of translations has Roman Savochenko - I hope he's okay.

I don't know what distribution you are using, but here (Debian 10) a quick search in Synaptic shows tde-i18n-uk trinity with the explanation "Ukrainian internationalized files for TDE", so I guess the answer is: TDE does support ukrainian language.

Yes, I have translated, or updated the present translation from KDE 3, for most TDE components used by me personally.
And that is great! Since I think of most those people will see PC in Ukrainian locale in the first time. :)
You may consider of using ready solutions on the Debian base as the fresh Live Disks with the last stable TDE and some my patches not accepted in TDE still. Those Live Disks are built regularly for Debian 7,8,9,10,11, so you will find one for correct work on any old age hardware. And download they you can here — http://ftp.oscada.org/OpenSCADA/Work/Live/ , from the OpenSCADA project server which still works in Ukraine!

Thank you for the many replies and the pointers to the sustainability of support. I'm only replying to this email, but my reply is for everyone who contributed to the thread.

The friend who is staying with the refugees is the "founder" of the Freifunk project in his place. Fast free network access is already taken care of.

I have meanwhile installed a Lenovo notebook (i3 processor) with Debian 11 and TDE and it feels very smooth. A Compaq NX5000 (i686) doesn't have the HDD Caddy, but unfortunately it can't be used without it. I'm looking for .... Unfortunately, the other notebooks in my basement were much older than I thought, so old that they didn't even have Ethernet. Were there times like this? I am old!

@Roman thanks for your translation work. I'll be happy to give you feedback as soon as we know how the children can deal with TDE in Ukrainian. Who knows, maybe they (or the parents, I don't know how IT-savvy they are, can contribute something).
I am fine, thanks!
