I used WICD, but since WICD and NetworkManager don't conflict in apt, I kept having both WICD and Network Manager try to launch at the same time.
I finallyl gave up and just let Network Manger (the default) do the job. It's passable, if a bit cumbersome to add static addresses to.

For simple WPA networks or even unprotected ones it's TDENetworkManager. Simple and efficient. Contrary to WiCD it displays meaningful error messages, not a Windows-like "Password bad or so, buy a new computer". To connect to other networks e.g. MSChap2 I use dedicated shell scripts. They turn NetworkManager off and connect using WPA Supplicant. MCbx
