Can not see removable USB device/drives?
It sounds like you are missing some packages! Let me do some testing on my end and see which ones they are, and I will get back to you tonight or tomorrow with additional information.

One additional question; do you have the kde-trinity package installed on your system?
Thanks!

Then there is a very good chance you do not have hal installed. Hal is required for the USB auto-detect and a few other power management features to function.

I did a search for all the 'hal' and 'udev' files and compared them to a working kde 3.5.9 system, I added some and removed some, it did not help. :-(
I installed GParted and gparted can see my usb drives, so I got the UUID and added them to fstab so I can use them, works ok for me, but I don't think everyone will want to do that. ;-)
Also what's the word on the Squeeze packages, are they ready for testing?

Yes, they are ready. Like the Lenny packages, they are still very much beta quality as you are experiencing now.
I believe I have fixed the Apply Settings button problem in the panel configuration dialog, along with the exiting on Apply issue. Please upgrade kdelibs and kdebase, restart your Trinity session, and verify that those issues are indeed resolved. I will look further into the HAL problem in the meantime.

I just tried a USB drive on my test Lenny system that has the kde-trinity metapackage installed. It worked, so I will give you a complete list of all hal packages that I have installed:
hal hal-info hal-trinity libhal-dev libhal-storage-dev libhal-storage1 libhal1
Try installing those packages and rebooting. If that does not rectify the problem please let me know and I will see what else I can dig up.

Can you post a list of all *-trinity packages that you have installed? I am almost certain a package is missing somewhere, as it all works perfectly for me on my up-to-date test system.
Also, when you click Log Out, are there any hibernate and/or suspend buttons visible on the bottom of the logout dialog? That is how I usually determine if the Trinity/HAL bindings are installed and working.

KDED Media Manager is there, but was not running, I started it and got the pop up to open it or do nothing, I chose to open it and get the error 'permissions denied', also the usb drive icon is not showing on the desktop.

KDED Media Manager is now starting on its own at boot and the USB icon is showing on the desktop after checking to show device icons in kcontrol, I still get 'permissions denied' when I try to mount it or open in filemanager. Note, in my trinity install on the ubuntu 10.04, when I plug in a USB drive on the pop-up I choose to open in filemanager I get 'permissions denied', but, I'm able to mount it by clicking on the desktop icon, again in the Lenny install I'm not able to mount the USB drive by clicking on the device icon or open in the filemanager, I get 'permissions denied' for both actions.
Talking about the kde menu, using the command 'synaptic' and checking the box to 'run as a different user' should start synaptic, it's not, when I uncheck the box to run as a different user and use the command 'gksu synaptic' it starts. I t.

I can confirm that; everything is up and running internally, so the only thing I can figure is that my ISP messed something up on my account when they added the new customer. Unfortunately, that means there will be an unknown delay before service is restored, as they may not be in the office until Monday.

John & Tim, thanks for the heads up, my Squeeze install is up and running, let me run it for awhile and I'll let you know if I find anything broken, this had KDE4 on it but it was removed to save HDD space.
When I right click a file and choose 'edit as root' I get the error 'Command not found!', but 'kdesudo' is installed.
I'm unable to run 'filemanager superuser' from the menu or start it from the run command or from the console.

I was unable to install 'amarok', after installing 'libmysqlclient15off' from 'Lenny/stable' amarok installed OK.
Wrong version 'libmysqlclient15off' in Squeeze to install 'amarok-trinity'.
When I right click a file and choose 'edit as root' I get the error 'Command not found!', but 'kdesudo' is installed.
Do you have kdesudo-trinity installed?
Also, you may need a version of sudo that has /opt/trinity/bin added to its internal RPATH variable; I have not added that to the Debian repositories yet (it is installed by default from the Ubuntu repository).
I'm unable to run 'filemanager superuser' from the menu or start it from the run command or from the console.
I'm unable to run 'kuser' from the menu or start it from the run command or from the console.

I should have said, kdesudo-trinity, yes it is installed.

OK, I'll be looking for the fix, thanks.

Do you still have your Lenny installation available? If so, please try to install sudo-trinity in that installation and see if the problems you mention are resolved after installation.
Also, Amarok should now install under Squeeze.

Yes, amarok is working in both Lenny and Squeeze, I'm in Lenny now.
Starting root applications from the menu is a mess, I've got things starting without asking for a password, synaptic only starts if I put 'gksu synaptic' in the menu, 'kdesu' is not working in the run command or the console.
Tim, you're in the USA, aren't you, can I call you or you call me, I have no charge for USA calls, maybe we can discuss the problem, it seems you are trying to set the Debian system like a Ubuntu system?
If you want my number, use a private email that I can reply to.

I was in the middle of doing a Squeeze install when the repo server went down, I hope it's back up and running soon so I can finish my Squeeze install.
It should be up again; my ISP decided that it would temporarily disconnect me so that it could install another customer. Needless to say I was not very happy!
Tim
Just checked it again and it's still down. :-(

I can confirm that; everything is up and running internally, so the only thing I can figure is that my ISP messed something up on my account when they added the new customer. Unfortunately, that means there will be an unknown delay before service is restored, as they may not be in the office until Monday.
