Hello all,
This is NOT a complain, just a question. While I'm working with a perfectly working Wheezy + TDE, I've had the curiosity to install "Siduction", a rolling distribution based on SID.
I've tried to install Trinity Desktop from the nightly builds (using jessie as target distribution). desktop-base-trinity installed correctly, but kde-trinity depends tde-trinity taht won't be installed.
My question: does this mean that Trinity and SID are incompatible (which I would understand, given that it's impossible - and makes little sense -to provide compatible packages) or is it one of these situations where packages are just being (re)created for Jessie and I should try it later. ANd if so how can I know when such a situation occurs?
Siduction is not interesting if I can't get a sensible desktop...
Regards,
Thierry

Packages are being rebuilt. Debian stopped providing certain package archive index files in January; this was not caught until recently when all Jessie builds started failing. Now that the Jessie archive is up to date, the build farm is rebuilding all TDE Jessie packages.

As nice as the "Testing" branch might be, it cannot be fully trusted. Even though Debian Testing is more stable than some "stable" distributions out there, it does change both randomly and severely.
I love it. Such wonderful chaos!

I'm perfectly aware of this, this is also why I run Wheezy as my "production" system (although I had to get a backport kernel because my machine has a haswell mainboard).
But I wanted to give it a try and its surprisingly stable so far (although I have to work with KDE 4 that only confirms why I choose Trinity).

My main system is wheezy but I always maintain a sid install also.
The problem with TDE here has been the core TDE components depend on a specific version of binutils.
At the moment binutils is the same as jessie so TDE should be installable in sid. Otherwise you need to pin binutils (and other associated packages) to jessie versions.
re siduction: very experienced dev and support team (but that doesn't extend to TDE)

I assume you care about the stable branch v3.5.13-sru? Because if you cared about development branch (nightly-builds), then you instead of the patch uses the current git tree.
To use the patch on stable branch may be necessary to backport patch. But it can be a bit challenging.
Please, can you be more specific?
I'm thinking of installing "TDE-Kubuntu" (http://ppa.quickbuild.pearsoncomputing.net/trinity/cdimages/kubuntu/precise/) but there are two errors on the LiveCD:
Error 1: 1. [right click on desktop] >> Configure Desktop >> Behavior >> [uncheck "Show Tooltips"] [now click "Apply"] the window will crash and any changes are not recorded.
---
Error 2: 2. [click on "My Computer"] >> [click on any partition] and the error popup reads:
"Permissions denied<p>please insure that<br>..." etc.
As you can see, the HTML code is visible in the popup message.
Will both of these errors be fixed?

I'd say it is between 8.xx and 10.xx. Timothy Pearson is the best person to answer this one, but here is a link to 10.10 maverick: http://trinity.motivewellbeing.org/cdimages/kubuntu/maverick/

Hi Tim.
Hardy 8.04 which I have booted up at the moment. Has KDE 3.5.10
Intrepid 8.10 which I also still have has KDE4
Best,
Nigel.

Is it possible to run all modern software/hardware under Hardy 8.04? (IE, widescreen monitors, firefox, mkv files, etc?)

It will do widescreen monitors, but that will also be dependent on your video card. With my Rage 128 Pro card the Acer 19" Widescreen (1366 x 768) says it's doing that, but according to the xorg log it''s doing 1280 x 768, but that's about as good as it will get for a 1366 x 768 monitor.
Firefox is stuck at 3.6.17
Opera won't get further than 12.02 due to the version of libc6
And as Lisi says there are newer versions of apps that won't work on it due to needing newer library versions.
I must say that I also have Xubuntu Lucid 10.04 installed with TDE 3.5.13.2 which works fine, and also Xubuntu Precise 12.04 with TDE 3.5.13.2
Just covering myself so it doesn't look like I'm plugging older distros. I'm still using Hardy on a daily basis mainly because there is a bunch of stuff on it that I had to build from source, linuxsampler for example so that it will play .sfx files. And you don't want to know how old the Fedora version is that I'm emailing from.
Nigel.
I'm considering switching distros because of the frequent problems with software suddenly not working, luckily I don't have many apps to worry over.
My 5 major concerns are:
1. Kaffeine (the 0.8 version that actually worked) 2. Audacity 3. AVI Demux (the old version that worked correctly) 4. WINE (1.4.1 worked with my programs) 5. Amarok
Thnx for the update.

Mint 15 is Ubuntu 13.04/Raring based and can use all the Raring repos including the ones for Trinity. Trinity installed and runs fine on Mint 15. I just checked in synaptic that all the packages on your list are available, including wine 1.4.1. I got best results from starting with the Mate DE version of Mint 15 and leaving most of Mate/Gnome installed. The result is fully up to date on media and sound support with Firefox 20.0.
Another good option might be Ubuntu Studio 12.04 with Trinity installed. I haven't tried this yet, but it'll be the next thing I do. Trinity works fine on standard 12.04 but I'm missing something needed to make the sound work. 12.04 uses wine 1.4, and so far that's been as good as wine 1.4.1.

1. I was considering switching to Mint, is there a version that has TDE already installed?

Mint doesn't come with Trinity at all, but the 13.04 repos work fine if you stick with Mint 15 (which is based on 13.04). Use the Mate desktop version and leave most of it installed.
List of versions: I'll get back to you later with the exact versions I found with synaptic in Mint 15. (I'm running Debian at the moment). Also, I'll post my sources.list.
Mint has the best media support I've yet seen. Annoying bugs are [1] it doesn't complete shutdown or reboot automatically like any other modern distro (you have to halt it with the shutdown button) and [2] some gtk widgets are mis-rendered in the Trinity DE (such as synaptic, but the programs all seem to work).
In general, the apps we know and love get broken in some versions and fixed again in others. Same with distros. That's why I try out and multi-boot lots of them. I still occasionally run Vector 6 "Kde Classic" with 3.5.10, but it's become useless for media now (even though it was great 18 months ago).

1. Think I'll skip Mint. I Googled 'mint 15 kaffeine' and the result page said 'kaffeine 1.2.2' which does not work. And I'm pretty sure they have the latest versions of 'Audacity' and 'WINE' which don't work.
(WINE 1.6.1 won't run certain programs, and if I use Audacity 2.0.5 to edit an mp3 the new file sounds 'tinny' for some reason. I didn't have any problems with the older versions of WINE or Audacity)
2. I almost went with Vector Linux 3 months ago. I didn't know it was outdated multi-media wise.
3. I'm going to try TDE-Kubuntu, it has the version of kaffeine that I want. And the repo has WINE 1.4.0. Not quite the version I want, but it's better than 1.6.1 which doesn't run anything.

It doesn't say it. It says that WINE and audacity both cause him problems, not that he runs one on the other.

I think you should be able to find the older version(s) of what you are worried about -- maybe at SourceForge, maybe at a devoted web site. You may need to compile from source to get them to play nice with new/updated distro libraries.
For instance, I installed an "older" version of KDE on this system to get away from KDE 4. :-)
Just my thoughts. Jonesy
I've tried that route and had mucho trouble getting them to install/run under the new libs. So now I stick with what is in the repos.
I'm not that tech savvy when I comes to compiling and installing. Plus I worry about wrecking what already works! So far TDE-Kubunto seems to have what I'm looking for.
And I too want to get away from KDE 4... :-D

I get wildly variable results from different distros.
I've found wine to be very unpredictable and needs a lot of tweaking. I agree that 1.4.1 is the best version so far, but I've also had good results with 1.6.1..with the particular apps I run in it. But I can't honestly say any version of wine is guaranteed to work for sure.
Vector 6 "Kde Classic" was fabulous for a while, but you're stuck with Firefox 3.6. The newest wine you can use in VL6 is 1.3.9 and I couldn't do much with it.

Will both of these errors be fixed?
I think, it is better to solve these problems, instead of use very old distribution as is Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy).
No, I am not a member of 'plugdev'.

Can anyone tell me which codecs I need to download from the ubuntu repo in order to play mp3, avi, mpg, mkv, etc files?
I'm trying the Live-CD but nothing plays. I understand this is done for legal reasons.
On Kubuntu 13.04, I think what you need is the package called flashplugin-installer.
This is what installs non-free Adobe media codecs into Firefox.
BTW, you can install and test not-included software into RAM on a running live CD. Apt-get and Synaptic think the Live CD RAM filesystem is a real filesystem. Any new software installed is only written to RAM and not to the CD, and how much you can install is limited by how much RAM you've got. This is great for testing.

Try that and try test-installing kaffeine and smplayer on the running live cd. to see if it works. If Synaptic isn't installed, do sudo apt-get install synaptic first.
If that doesn't work out, try the March 22nd 2014 nightly build live CD from here: http://ftp.fau.de/trinity/cdimages/ubuntu/
And do the same test install. That's Ubuntu 13.04.
And/or try Ubuntu Studio 12.04 then installing Trinity on it from the Precise repos.
You may well have to try several OS's before you get one that does what you want.

Ok, first of all - thanks to everyone for their help!
Second, I checked the included files in 'Studio' and it doesn't have the files I want. So if I install it I'm going to get the bad versions of some programs (kaffeine 122) from the repo.
Anyway I think this will take care of the audio problems!

But why not try actually installing them rather than installing software on a running live CD? It would give a much more satisfactory picture, and wouldn't take long. I reckon around half an hour for a basic install of an OS. And a little longer to install other bits.
Lisi
You can do the same testing on a hard install too.

I was using the Klipper app under "Kubuntu Precise" LiveCD and noticed that it doesn't allow you to edit the contents like the new Klipper app under KDE4 does.
Is there some way to upgrade this app so that you can edit the contents?
You can probably install and run the Kde4 version of Klipper in TDE, but apt-get will want to install most of Kde4 DE as dependencies. A leaner installation may be possible by manually downloading and installing Klipper with dpkg -i, and working through all the deps by hand. It won't install straight off the bat, but dpkg will tell you what the dependencies are.

IIRR, klipper in KDE4 also needs to have akonadi installed.

I'm not familiar with the command "dpkg -i"... How would I use it to install the new Klipper? I don't mind installing the libraries if it works ok.
dpkg is used to install packages that you downloaded manually as opposed the automated process of using apt-get or synaptic. It also has uses for manually or automatically configuring packages during or after installation. The -i switch means "install". 'man dpkg' or 'dpkg --help' will explain the other uses of dpkg.
Getting all the libraries installed manually is tedious, but dpkg will tell you what the missing dependencies are and install the 'broken' package anyway. You'll be forced to remove and re-install it in the course of fixing the dependencies.

I never have been. I aptitude install the dependencies, and when I get to the end aptitude announces that there is a partly installed package and installs it without my doing anything further.

+1
It would be better to use "apt-get install --no-install-recommends <package name>" . This will install the package and only the depends, which you want anyway. You can configure apt to do this as the default behavior.

Does it not ? It certainly used to. I'm away from home for a week or two so can't check that detail unfortunately. I do hope it's not gone from Trinity too, I was at a loss when KDE4 removed the ability to edit clipboard contents from klipper.

Ah the wonder of KVM and downloadable live images :-) Yes, KDE3 klipper does allow editing of items in the context specific popup and, last time I was at home to use it, so did Trinity 3.5.12 klipper. Assuming you are talking of the same feature I am, if you don't have this feature any more it would seem to be a regression.
To test: highlight a URL like this one: http://test.invalid Cause the Web-URL popup to appear (it may be automatic or you may need to press control-alt-R) You should see "Edit Contents" as the second to last option

Hi all!
I should add that the graphic equivalent of apt-get update in Konsole is to click on the ''Reload'' button, which is the leftmost button in Synaptic.

Hi all!
I should add that the graphic equivalent of apt-get update in Konsole is to click on the ''Reload'' button, which is the leftmost button in Synaptic.

Alexandre, but the catch is that Tini wants to install Synaptic ;)

Yes, just install Synaptic from Synaptic :) Ok, just forget this one :)
You are sure that Kubuntu doesn't already come with Synaptic installed? Seems to be a very rare exception, or not a regular build.

Tini, you really would get on a lot better with a lot less frustration if you were to find out how deb package managers work before trying to use one. You keep landing yourself with easily predictable problems because you don't really know what to do. None of us are born knowing. Just look it up. Look before you leap!

Canonical has announced that the latest long-term support release of its Ubuntu Linux distribution will be available in two days.
The Linux company made the availability announcement of Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, codenamed "Trusty Tahr" on Tuesday, coincidentally alongside chief rival Red Hat holding its Red Hat Summit in San Francisco.
We've already covered the main desktop features elsewhere, and suffice it to say that our reviewer was encouraged by the changes.
As for the server features where Canonical is keen to gain influence against well-funded rival Red Hat, Ubuntu 14.04 wraps in new features such as support for the "Icehouse" OpenStack release, containerization technology Docker, and ARM-64 chips.
I tried to install TDE-Kubuntu Precise (http://ftp.fau.de/trinity/cdimages/kubuntu/precise/) and was told there is another version of linux there.
I was then offered a choice to 'install alongside' (I don't have enough space) or to 'replace current linux'.
I chose 'replace current linux' but was told this would use the entire disk and all of my personal files would be erased! I want to install the new OS, I don't want to format the entire drive and lose all of my files.
Is there a way to install linux without losing 700MB of my personal files?
Right now? Back it up and do a full install. Otherwise ? Use a separate home partiton On Apr 11, 2014 9:18 PM, "Tini" trin@telekon.org wrote:

In order to backup the files I'll have to buy a 1TB drive. And I meant to say I have '700GB of data', not '700MB'.

well... Okay here's a longer answer... You could in theory delete everything besides your home folder, then install on partition, and manually make a user when you're done the install

I think you should download GpartedLiveCD iso , burn to CD and boot up in LiveCD mode. Then you can see ( with your eyes ) what your options are. If you see a picture of your hard drive, it makes thinking easier

Yep, but be aware that if anything goes wrong you WILL loose your data.
You don't say how much space you have or why another drive is no option, but having 700 GB of valuable data and no backup... that's dangerous. Hard disk do die...
As a side note, I don't understand why people all seem to put all their data in the home directory, just to run in this sort of problem. Unless I have a very small disc (an SDD on a laptop for example), I start by creating at least six partitions: I get two root, two home, one swap and one data partition. I ususally use 50 GB for root and 15 GB for home, but smaller si possible. On a 1 TB drive, that leaves over 850 GB space for data.
This way, wether I want to try a distribution or upgrade, I can make a full new install without distroying my working system, and simply switch the default boot once the new install is working.
As Tony said, provided the space is available, you could use gparted to get this sort of setup (although your data are at risk when you resize a partition too).

Install VLC from the repository (not from Videolan site), it is known to be the most codec ready.

I've had trouble with VLC. I use smplayer instead.
Sometimes when I delete a file the trash icon doesn't activate the "Empty Trash" link in the menu. I have to open the can and delete the file inside.
Does the latest version of TDE fix the problem of sometimes not being able to empty the trash folder?
PS I forgot how much I prefer KDE3 over KDE4! :-D
