I understand - I have usually in KMail 4, 5 accounts. Also I'm really not too happy ... But I do not mind it too much. In the mail archive folders I disabled email scanning and checks for new messages got at an acceptable level.

In the account settings you can choose whether to be included in the manual mail checking, which excludes the account from this check caused by sending a message.

thanks for your time. I thought I have tested all combinations of (un-)checking "include in manual mail check" for the different accounts without any luck. I might misunderstand the options. I'll try again.
