Coffee is the first of the four food groups, the foundation of a geeky diet.

Sorry to hear about your networking problems. Hopefully you don't have comcast or any of it's sub companies. I'm hearing terrible things from those who use them here.
Now, onto the important stuff. I completely disagree with you on coffee being the first item in the food group. It's clearly chocolate.
I feel better,
Kate

Unless you are descended from Monteczuma. Somebody tried to reconstruct the original royal recipe, and it seems to have contained hot peppers. Now that would be an interesting spin on chocolate! Oh yes, and then there is that Mexican dish called mole (ague accent over the E), which contains chocolate. Chocolate can be so many more things than just candy.
Long ago, an ethnobotanist informed me that all peppers (the plant, not peppercorns) originated in the highlands of Mexico, near present day Yucatan and Oaxaca. This, incidentally, establishes that there were some kind of very ancient connections between the Americas and Africa; because I found references to an Egyptian text (of the tenth century BCE) that mentions the use of hot peppers in cooking. Put this together with Olmec sculptures in Central America (with clearly African features) and it follows that there must have been some contact between Africa and the Americas by at least that time.

I used to work here: 1963 - 1965: Coffee And Confusion, 1339 Grant Avenue, North Beach, San Francisco, CA. The owner Sylvia Fennel had the habit of paying her artists with barely two or three bucks (which is fair enough just to buy a beer or a cigarettes) plus a free hamburger courtesy of the house. Janis obviously wanted to earn more than that and then at the end of the evening she went into the audience passing the hat.
I was the guy how fixed the food and drinks there and one of my best sellers was a mixture of 1/2 cup of strong black coffee or espresso, 3 tbl spoons each unsweetened chocolate and sugar, fill with whipped cream, mix and top with more whipped cream. You won't be sorry if you give it a try.
By the way if you are a Janis Joplin fan, Janis was at her best doing one man shows before Big Brother and the Holding Company, she never needed a band.
Cheers,

As Kate wrote in other thread, please find some other venue to litter with willing poison consumption, animals, and other OT jabber. This list's archive is certainly not going to be a good lure to anyone searching for a different DE to switch to if this pollution isn't dialed way back.
My proposal here: please, please, please all of you open a WhatsApp group to discuss social life. I am very annoyed to search between a lot of gossip the parts with real information in this mailing list lately.
Just my 2 cent Gerhard

If you do not like off topic then why do you read off topic.
Top posting annoys me, but maybe I'm a bit more forgiving than you.

I was thinking lately that it mutates into a social app for people who don't use social networks :D Seems I am not alone. But hey given the amount of text exchanged, I don't wonder why companies like whatsapp or facebook make that much money.

Actually, I agree (and I am one of the worst sinners). Mea maxima culpa! However, I abhor Facebook, etc., and only use one tiny, obscure social network (Categorian).
I was going to suggest (before my network issues rendered me silent), that when we begin to go off-topic, just send an email directly to me or whoever else wishes to be included, so that others aren't bothered. Otherwise, I still use Categorian, and there is also Jabber.
It seems to me that some of us (including, but not limited to, myself) tend to spin off on those tangents. One person makes a comment, then another adds something or echoes, then it snowballs, and soon we have an avalanche. This bothers me, too, but I don't think you'll stop it altogether without ruining everything. So the solution would seem to be to channel it somewhere else, where those who wish to go off-topic can do so, and everybody else can ignore them, or us.
Also, let me say again that what we have in common is more important than our differences. If I have offended anybody, I apologize.

No, we have a T3 connection in my building, very fast when it's working (2 mbps!), but everybody who lives on this street (and their dogs, too) knows our password.
The problem with networking is maybe partly external (as our network attracts too many wannabe crackers), but also something different is going on with Devuan that I don't like. (See my thread to come on this problem.)
