Hello. Just installed update to tde 14.1.2 and working fine. Thanks again for a wonderful desktop to use on my debian/12.5.bookworm system.
I also use some commercial packages installed over the years, and all has been great. However, recently, I have one commercial package upgrade that is trying to claim because I use tde, I am seeing this problem (it won't run). BTW, if I use the previous version of said package, it works fine. Said package developer/tech support claim it works fine for him on default gnome desktop for debian/12.5. Hence, the incentive to send in this tech support question to tde conflicts that have shown up when I install gnome-3.
To install gnome on debian when it is not the default, I issued "sudo apt install task-gnome-desktop". During this install, gnome decides there is a conflict, and wants me to remove "desktop-base-trinity" and "tde-trinity" in order to proceed. This I do. After the new installation, apt is telling me that the following packages are no longer needed and I can autoremove them: "arts-trinity imlib-base imlib11 kig-trinity kuickshow-trinity libarts1-audiofile-trinity libarts1-mpeglib-trinity libtqt3-integration-trinity mpeglib-trinity synaptic-trinity tde-core-trinity tdebase-trinity tdeedu-trinity tdegraphics-trinity tdemultimedia-trinity xcalib". This I do NOT do !
Everything seems to be running as normal on both tde and gnome3. I still use tdm to login, and I can choose between tde and gnome (and variants).
If I try to reinstall "desktop-base-trinity" or "tde-trinity", then it looks like a large chunk of gnome packages will be removed, and gnome will not remain intact.
I am concerned to also remove the trinity packages listed above for fear it might break my tde desktop.
What is the best way to install/configure where tde and gnome can co-exist on debian/12.5. Not that I will slow down using tde in any way, but there might be a reason to run gnome where needed in order to comply.
BTW, my said package fails exactly the same way on gnome3 as it is doing on tde, and their tech support is still trying to help.
Thanks in advance if you try to help on this.

This sounds like a case of the supplier of the commercial software expecting a specific version of some library and neither mentioning that nor bundling it. The library is probably *not* related to TDE in any way. (This happens to me with commercial games from time to time.)
Your first step is to start the program from the command line and see what it says. If you're lucky, it will spit out a useful failure message.

Would it help to use `ldconfig` to see what dynamic libraries the main executable depends upon? If the main executable is a script, you may need to open it in a text editor and try to understand what binaries/libraries it tries to load and then use `ldconfig` on them.

Thanks to all for your help. Perhaps the way I presented this problem should have been better. I am not so interested in getting help for the commercial product here. That is for the company that I purchased the software from.
What I really want help on here: If I decide to autoremove the packages that arose from installing gnome ("arts-trinity imlib-base imlib11 kig-trinity kuickshow-trinity libarts1-audiofile-trinity libarts1-mpeglib-trinity libtqt3-integration-trinity mpeglib-trinity synaptic-trinity tde-core-trinity tdebase-trinity tdeedu-trinity tdegraphics-trinity tdemultimedia-trinity xcalib"). If I remove these packages that are "no longer used", will it break my tde installation. I am pretty sure if I reinstall "desktop-base-trinity" and "tde-trinity", I will no longer be able to run the gnome desktop.
I would like to keep them both active as an option.
Forget about the 3rd-party commercial software. Let's just concentrate on having tde and gnome both as optional desktops from tdm.
1. Should I be able to do this with clean install ? 2. If so, is it safe to remove the excess trinity packages ? 3. If not, and I bring back tde to the full install state, is there a better way to install gnome without any issues ?

Yes it will. You dont understand what "no longer used" means in this context. It means that this packages were autoinstalled by dependencies, but there is currently nothing that depends on them because you uninstalled trinity metapackages. You need to mark them as manually installed to stop apt from suggesting to remove them.
I am pretty sure if I reinstall "desktop-base-trinity" and "tde-trinity", I will no longer be able to run the gnome desktop.
All of them are metapackages, your dont need them to run either trinity or gnome

- Should I be able to do this with clean install ?
No idea, you didnt post what actual packages caused a conflict.
- If so, is it safe to remove the excess trinity packages ?
No, as i said above, they are not "excess".
- If not, and I bring back tde to the full install state, is there a
better way to install gnome without any issues ?
You have both of them installed and working already.
Nick, thanks for your information. On 1. I agree that the packages are meta-packages, but if I try to install them, it will ask to remove several gnome packages. So, it is good to know I don't need them. Thanks. On 2. They are not excess, but they are not needed. OK On 3. I agree. But , due to my inexperience in running both tde and gnome simultaneously, I wanted to make sure that I did not get too far down the path if someone like yourself on here who might have done this before could give me any good advice. For example, after implementing Martin Hodges suggested fix below, I felt comfortable enough to have two sessions open at once. I went from tde to gnome, all worked. Then logged off gnome, and got sent right back to the tde session. However, not all of the apps that were running on tde before were there. In fact, my qterminal did not accept keystrokes, but the mouse did. Later I realized that all keystrokes did not work. So, I logged off the tde session and went back to tdm. All sessions now closed, I opened up a new tde session as usual, and everything seems fine. This is not a major deal, but from experiences years ago, sometimes entire system can get messed up and have to go through a lot of effort to bring it back to normal. I feel comfortable with this new setup now, and glad you and others helped me out here.

This will mark the packages as manually installed and will stop the nagging about not being needed.

Martin, this worked for me and I feel very comfortable going forward now. It will be interesting to explore gnome again. TDE still my favorite.
