the final part of my upgrade saga was installation of new nvidia drivers, which has in the past taken at least two days and required anguish, blood sacrifices to unknown demons, and angry outburts at anyone who encounters me.
but i just now installed the nvisia drivers for ubuntu-16.04 and they . . . just worked! (the act of writing my particular configuration, primaty monitor below secondary monitor, won't write to the x.org configuration file, so i have to redo it on every reboot, but that's as it has always been.)
now if i could cook up the mouse cursor i've wanted ever since i switched from OS/2 to linux. there was an OS/2 utility that allowed one to write one's own mouse (and other) cursors, and i got it and used it and loved it because it was possible to make a pointer arrow that was the reverse of whatever it was over -- black on white, white on black, blue on red, etc., to the point of even being half one color and half the other when it rested on an edge. this made it manifestly visible, always. linux has nothing to match it and i intend to undertake a course of study that will result in its being replicated for linux.
i'll send postcards.

My old Amiga system had that capability too, but for some reason the Linux desktops seem to have overlooked that particular customization. Being strongly left-handed, I changed my cursor to point to the right instead of the left, but on Linux I'm unable to do that. :-(

I remember having that feature on an old Windoze system (2000 Pro or XP?), and also on the rotten Apple before that, and on Amiga even before that. Nice, because it's always visible over any background.
If you can find a package for it anywhere (deb or tar.gz or what-not), and submit a request, you may find that the Trinity devs are willing to create such a package for you.
When I installed my Debian OS, I started with the current KDE desktop, so I got all cursors that appealed to me, and they work in Trinity even after I have got rid of KDE. They also have left-handed mouses (mice? meece?). I use a KDE animated cursor theme called TSC, which is made up of concentric circles, sort of like a target, so that it is neutral in regard to whether one uses the right or left hand; it's also visible against most backgrounds.

Isn't there a bitmap used for the crusor somewhere? Wouldn't it be possible to replace it with a mirrored cursor?

I have no idea what's behind the cursor.

they are, at least on my machine, in /usr/share/icons/[theme]/cursors. weirdly, they have no extension, but i just now tried to open one in the gimp and it came right up. flipping it was easy. ah, but i then remembered there's more than that -- a trick pixel that is at the very point and that serves as the hotspot for making selections. and i do not know what we might do about that.
if you go to kcontrol > Peripherals > Mouse >Cursor Theme, you'll see a list of installed themes; on my system i find Crystal White left, Cryatal Green left; and a few other Crystal [Color] left ones. No idea where they came from, but I think there are oodles of left-handed cursors on the kde "store."

ah, another member of the sinister tribe! i've always used trackballs, beginning with one in the 1980s that had a ball the size of a baseball -- but in the DOS days having the left hand available for the real work on the keyboard made sense, and since then it's been like shifting gears, something i've trained my otherwise useless right hand to do.
i could swear i saw a KDE icon theme that allowed pointing from the other side. but in any case, i bet you could find the pointer you like, toss it in the gimp or some such, do the laft-right flip, and save it and it would work.

Yes, the current KDE has some left-handed themes. And they will work with TDE (even if you uninstall everything else KDE), because once installed they reside somewhere in your home folder, I believe. (I did find the folder once before, but I'll be darned if I can find it now!) I don't think you have to install a lot of KDE crap to get them.
