Hello everyone! My PCLinuxOS TDE non-official remaster is ready to download!
I call it non-official because it doesn't come from the PCLOS team and since it contains software coming from outside of their repos, it is also not supported by them.
It can be seen as a whole as the much-loved PCLOS 2007, but fully updated and upgraded. It is a complete system that can be used as a LiveDVD or it can be installed (from the LiveDVD).
Major apps pre-installed (in no special order): -PCLinuxOS 2012 base system with KDE 4.8 stripped out and replaced by TDE 3.5.13.1 -Amarok -K3b -Firefox -Dolphin -Konqueror -LibreOffice -Quanta plus -VirtualBox -SuperKaramba -Synaptic -VLC media player -Kaffeine -BleachBit -GParted -QtCurve theme -Baghira theme -The GIMP -QCad -Kontact -Skype -KMyMoney -P7Zip -All PCLinuxOS regular configuration apps -Localisation Manager, to translate your system -LibreOffice Manager
System requirement: A x86 computer with at least 256mb of RAM. It is a 32bit system, but it can be installed on a 64bit system too.
It is available in a 4-parts zip archive. (Please note that Ark doesn't support muti-part archives, so use another decompression app.)

It would be very appreciated if someone can host the .iso file in a mirror!

What is the recommended method to recombine and extract the .iso image, please? Exact Linux command(s) would be nice for this GOF.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Note: Someone asked how to extract the archive. Here is how to do it:
To extract the iso file, download the 4 parts, put them in the same folder. Open the first part with a archive program that supports multi-parts archives and extract the iso file! On Linux, File-Roller (from GNOME), P7Zip and PeaZip supports this type of archive. On Windows, most archive apps supports multi-part archives. Then, burn the iso file on a DVD with a burning program. (K3B, Brasero, ...)

Downloaded and installed. I haven't yet spent very much time with it, but as far as I can see it is absolutely excellent! I have encountered no problems so far.
Thank you very much, it's nice to have PCLinuxOS again!

Thanks! I'm not a developer, but I tried to put together the best programs of PCLOS, with the TDE packages of François Andriot and it works pretty well. With a nice theme, TDE can look almost as good as KDE4!
I use it every day on my little Asus EEE 2G surf (installed on a sd card) and it runs perfectly. It has exactly the same hardware support as the regular PCLOS, so it should run well on most computers.

Hi everyone.
I just updated my system to newest binutils, gcc, glibc, etc, and I still get this exact error building kcontrol. Seems its not linking a library or header file...any clues? http://trinity-devel.pearsoncomputing.net/?0::5296
I was going to try to contact that guy with same error but his email doesn't show all the way there? Anyhow..hope this goes to the list or whatever this is.. Thanks.

Hi Alexandre,
I've downloaded and installed your ISO of PCLinuxOS. It works just fine. No ! its really good !!!
My hardware is a SIS 660 mainboard with integrated graphics and a dual core, 3Ghz P4 with 1Gb ram, so not exactly high end. It doesn't see the wireless adaptor though, which is no surprise, Open SuSE doesn't see it either.
Thank you for making it available for us all. Also special thanks to the trinity developers. Your hard work is very much appreciated.

Thanks! If you go in the Network Center (an icon on the desktop), can you see your wireless adaptor?
If not, you can go in the PCLOS Control Center (the round grey icon in the taskbar, right beside the ''start menu'') and in the Network & Internet category, you can choose ''Set up a new network interface''. Choose ''Wireless'' and if your network adapter is not automatically configured, it will offer you the choice of using ndiswrapper. Ndiswrapper allow you to use the Windows driver made for your wifi card on Linux. Some windows drivers are already installed, or you can install yours. Then, their are good chances that it will work as it should!
Thank you very much! -Alexandre

do you know the wifi adapter involved? sometimes one can install firmware which brings them alive.

No ! Not at least without opening the box and having a look at the adaptor. Alexandre mentioned windows drivers and ndiswrapper. I don't recall if there was ever a driver disc.
PS. I just had a look around the back of the machine. Sometime in the past I've removed the antenna... Something else to look for. :-)
Thanks for the tips.

No mention of anything wireless.
I've not had a chance to open up the machine to have a look at the card. However I have got all the bits aside ready to build a new machine, its just having the time to put it all together then this one can be re-purposed.
Thanks for your help.

Hi Felmon,
lspci: invalid option -'w'
that's not what I wrote but never mind, read below.
(I wrote "lspci -vv"; that's two instances of 'v'.)
However lspci on its own :- Watch out for wrap:
00:00.0 Host bridge: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] 661FX/M661FX/M661MX Host (rev 11) 00:01.0 PCI bridge: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] SiS AGP Port (virtual PCI-to-PCI bridge) 00:02.0 ISA bridge: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] SiS963 [MuTIOL Media IO] (rev 25) 00:02.1 SMBus: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] SiS961/2 SMBus Controller 00:02.5 IDE interface: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] 5513 [IDE] 00:02.7 Multimedia audio controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] AC'97 Sound Controller (rev a0) 00:03.0 USB Controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] USB 1.1 Controller (rev 0f) 00:03.1 USB Controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] USB 1.1 Controller (rev 0f) 00:03.2 USB Controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] USB 2.0 Controller 00:04.0 Ethernet controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] SiS900 PCI Fast Ethernet (rev 90) 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] 661/741/760 PCI/AGP or 662/761Gx PCIE VGA Display Adapter
No mention of anything wireless.
so it looks like the driver would run on a silicon graphics chip.
I just realized the better detector is
lshw -C network
do you know how to run this as root? it may not be necessary. let's try it and see what it yields.
I'm getting the impression your chip isn't well supported but perhaps someone else can chip in with knowledge of it.
I've not had a chance to open up the machine to have a look at the card.
you don't have to.
However I have got all the bits aside ready to build a new machine, its just having the time to put it all together then this one can be re-purposed.
Thanks for your help.
not sure how far I can help but maybe a step or so on.

My hardware is a SIS 660 mainboard with integrated graphics and a dual core, 3Ghz P4 with 1Gb ram, so not exactly high end. It doesn't see the wireless adaptor though, which is no surprise, Open SuSE doesn't see it either.
do you know the wifi adapter involved? sometimes one can install firmware which brings them alive.
F.
No ! Not at least without opening the box and having a look at the adaptor. Alexandre mentioned windows drivers and ndiswrapper. I don't recall if there was ever a driver disc.
PS. I just had a look around the back of the machine. Sometime in the past I've removed the antenna... Something else to look for.
:-)
Thanks for the tips.
what does
lspci -vv
tell you?
F.
Hi Felmon,
lspci: invalid option -'w'
that's not what I wrote but never mind, read below.
(I wrote "lspci -vv"; that's two instances of 'v'.)
Ups... Sorry my error :-( It looked/looks like a "W". Hangs head in shame.
Running lspci with the correct switch gives a more verbose output but basically the same as below.
However lspci on its own :- Watch out for wrap:
00:00.0 Host bridge: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] 661FX/M661FX/M661MX Host (rev 11) 00:01.0 PCI bridge: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] SiS AGP Port (virtual PCI-to-PCI bridge) 00:02.0 ISA bridge: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] SiS963 [MuTIOL Media IO] (rev 25) 00:02.1 SMBus: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] SiS961/2 SMBus Controller 00:02.5 IDE interface: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] 5513 [IDE] 00:02.7 Multimedia audio controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] AC'97 Sound Controller (rev a0) 00:03.0 USB Controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] USB 1.1 Controller (rev 0f) 00:03.1 USB Controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] USB 1.1 Controller (rev 0f) 00:03.2 USB Controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] USB 2.0 Controller 00:04.0 Ethernet controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] SiS900 PCI Fast Ethernet (rev 90) 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] 661/741/760 PCI/AGP or 662/761Gx PCIE VGA Display Adapter
No mention of anything wireless.
so it looks like the driver would run on a silicon graphics chip.

Yes, no problem. As root.
bash: lshw: command not found
Mmm. Seems that lshw is not on my machine.

This machine has never run windows ! Its a "Packard Bell" that was formatted and Linux put on from the word go. So I have no idea if the wireless adapter even functions.

do you have something called hwinfo installed, maybe under /usr/sbin/hwinfo?
just trying to see what the operating system thinks is in your box.
my strategy, and maybe someone else can check it out, is to see what the software says is in your box, then see if there is a driver or something that can make use of it. there's also looking up the specs of the machine online

Yes "hwinfo" gives me lots of info. None make any reference to a wireless adaptor. However I did learn a number of things that I had no idea about. Things like who actually made the mainboard and that the CPU could/should be running at 3.2Ghz.

I much appreciate your help in trying to identify and get this wireless adaptor working, but I'm struggling at the moment trying to cope with ill health, work, and other problems. I don't wish to appear ungrateful, but everything is working well. Having wireless connectivity isn't too important at the moment.
Thank you for your valued input.
Alexandre,
Looks really good! But I see PCLinuxOS is now a rolling release; will that cause problems with TDE someday? If I install it, I want to be sure it'll be a stable system.

Good question! As of now, I have my system fully updated with no problems. I have a newer version of firefox and vlc media player. Updating PCLOS is not supposed to create problems. The TDE packages are created by Francois Andriot and I don't know how much TDE will change with the next releases. If the changes to TDE are major (as in the R14 we'll see in some months), the thing to do would be to go in the PCLOS control center, choose back GDM as a session manager if you have changed your session manager to TDM, log out and choose IceWM as the window manager. Then, from the instructions given by Francois Andriot, probably remove all the Trinity packages, clicking on Update and on Mark all upgrade. Then you could reinstall TDE. After that, you could log out, choose TDM as a desktop environment and use the new TDE. I will also do a new version when we'll see a new version of TDE. -Alexandre
Hi Calvin,
Did you have time to start a torrent of this, yet? If so, where can I find the torrent file?
Thanx very much,
Elcaset

If you like what you see, you can consider giving some money to the Trinity Desktop Environment project!
Give me your comments! -Alexandre
Note: Someone asked how to extract the archive.
Thank you! -Alexandre
