Subject: Re: [trinity-users] Unsubscribe threat
What is beginning to happen around the net -- with 'responsible' ISPs -- is the enforcement of Forward-confirmed reverse DNS (FCrDNS)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forward-confirmed_reverse_DNS
-and-
Sender Policy Framework (SPF)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sender_Policy_Framework
In a nutshell, lists email distribution is affected because the emails are re-sent by the list server as From: The_Originator@example.com. Which is true -- it did originate "From:" me, or "From:" you. But, it appears to be a forgery to incoming mailservers that do this checking, because those emails CANNOT be "From:" that user from THAT MTA.
For example, this email - From: Jonesy trinity@jonz.net cannot be sent from the mail servers at vali.starlink.edu --- at least not with FCrDNS checking.
FCrDNS cuts down on A LOT of spam. My SysAdmin says 90% of incoming email is pure crap spam -- with forged "From:"s out of cracked botnet machines. FCrDNS cuts down on ALMOST ALL of that. Think of the savings...
But, I've had to remove my domain from that checking by my ISP because I am on so many lists, email reflectors, what-ever-you-call-them. Eventually lists will have to evolve to some different scheme.
Huh? So you are intentionally having emails bounce?
Too much information? Jonesy
brb; head hurts ;P

Huh? No.
The receiving MTA at my ISP rejected an email from the list with:
Reporting-MTA: dns; vali.starlink.edu X-Postfix-Queue-ID: 0CC704560250 X-Postfix-Sender: rfc822; trinity-users-return-3521-trinity=jonz.net@lists.pearsoncomputing.net Arrival-Date: Thu, 6 Sep 2012 15:04:39 -0500 (CDT)

My (email) ISP said "sender domain does not exist".
Here's one that Robert Xu inquired of me about (because it was from the list -- my list message being sent on to him.)
Reporting-MTA: dns; vali.starlink.edu X-Postfix-Queue-ID: 8701F456024E X-Postfix-Sender: rfc822; trinity-users-return-3629-robxu9=gmail.com@lists.pearsoncomputing.net Arrival-Date: Sun, 23 Sep 2012 17:35:17 -0500 (CDT)
Final-Recipient: rfc822; robxu9@gmail.com Original-Recipient: rfc822;robxu9@gmail.com Action: failed Status: 5.7.1 Remote-MTA: dns; gmail-smtp-in.l.google.com Diagnostic-Code: smtp; 550 5.7.1 Unauthenticated email is not accepted from this domain. k2si7073925igo.55
Xu's email provider (Gmail) reported "Unauthenticated email is not accepted from this domain."
Lisi also reported a "warning from trinity-users@lists.pearsoncomputing.net" on September 22, but she did not inlude the report body showing the reason for the rejection. She showed the headers from the email notifying her of the rejection -- not the rejection report. (At least that's what I see at http://trinity-users.pearsoncomputing.net/?0::3615 )
I get one rejection notification every 10 days or so. So far the "warning from trinity-users@lists.pearsoncomputing.net" makes it to me and, so, ezmlm does not think me to be a 'hard bounce' (a no-longer-valid email addy.)
One thing: I've been on the list since, maybe, back in April (or earlier), and I only think I've seen this 'problem' in the last 2 months or so.

This *should* be fixed as of a week or two ago; can you confirm?
Thanks!

Confirm a not-failing? heh... As a close colleague of mine once said for a LARGE piece of corporate software we built and maintained: "It is not known not to fail." I think we'll have to set this aside and see if it never happens again.
My last "Fail" notification was received yesterday:
From: trinity-users-help@lists.pearsoncomputing.net To: trinity@jonz.net Date: 4 Oct 2012 08:52:06 -0000 Subject: warning from trinity-users@lists.pearsoncomputing.net
but the report was for a list message dated Sept 22:
Reporting-MTA: dns; vali.starlink.edu X-Postfix-Queue-ID: AA46E456024C X-Postfix-Sender: rfc822; trinity-users-return-3615-trinity=jonz.net@lists.pearsoncomputing.net Arrival-Date: Sat, 22 Sep 2012 10:43:34 -0500 (CDT)

Why the bounce was 'held' for 12 days before I was "warned" is strange. I don't think the MTA for pearsoncomputing.net re-tried the message every day for 12 days and then reported - by date- the first failure.
I'll reply to this list message if I see another "warning".
Regards, Jonesy

FWIW, I had a "warning" yesterday. I can't quote it verbatim because I deleted it.

Yabutt... Didn't the included report(s) refer to a message (or two) that were dated ten days _prior_ to the warning email?
That was always the case here.

That would be awesome, we are in need of server space and bandwidth :)
Could you be more accurate? How much space would trinity project use? How many cpu power? Simple little more information ;)

I pulled the AOL address from within the messages forwarded to the list, so apparently that particular AOL message must have from someone else who has had trouble in the past. For clarity, can you please forward to me the last bounce message you have received in its entirety so that I can investigate the issue?
Thanks!

I have just gotten two bounce warnings, both from trinity-users:
+½ - I got one.
Lisi
I suggest you use an Email provider other than AOL for your mailing
list
subscriptions; the error code that AOL blocked your messages with is
not
caused by the TDE mail server and is detailed at this link: http://postmaster.aol.com/Postmaster.Errors.php#554conb1
I don't use AOL, and although I receive through Gmail, I send through
my
ISP, Zen, which is definitely reputable.
vali.starlink.edu Is nothing to do with me, so far as I know.
Shall I just go back to ignoring them?
Or should I change to a Zen address for this list? Lisi
I pulled the AOL address from within the messages forwarded to the list, so apparently that particular AOL message must have from someone else who has had trouble in the past. For clarity, can you please forward to me the last bounce message you have received in its entirety so that I can investigate the issue?

From what I can see, this means that Google temporarily blocked all messages from the TDE server, presumably for spam concerns. This seems to happen from time to time with other mailing lists as well, and all I can really suggest is to use a provider that is more list-friendly.

Looking at Lisi's bounce results (and seeing that it was a message from _me_ to the list), I notice that the (only) DKIM-Signature in the headers was _mine_ going out of _my_ ISP to the listserver. There is _no_ DKIM-Signature: from the outbound operation from the listserver. So, any DKIM checking on that email's headers would be invalid. I.e., trinity@jonz.net is NOT authorized to send an email from vali.starlink.edu -- as interpreted by Gmail.
I believe there should be an additional DKIM-Signature: inserted (added) by vali.starlink.edu (or mail.pearsoncomputing.net) to correct Gmail "550 5.7.1 Unauthenticated email is not accepted from this domain" bounces. One Ref: https://forums.aws.amazon.com/thread.jspa?threadID=97354

Anyway, that'sa what I'm a'thinkin...
