Hello,
yesterday i installed TDE (nightly builds) on top of Ubuntu 12.04. On login, all i get is a blank desktop with an equally blank xterm, nothing else. Oh yes, the first time i also got this: "cannot open theme file /opt/trinity/share/apps/kdm/themes/kubunty-trinity" I linked the tdm folder to the above, but nothing changed, except that the error message disappeared.
Is this the current state of the project for 12.04, or am i doing something wrong?
Thanks, Mike
Sorry to say, but the nighty builds are a mess right now.
Kopete does not work TDM does not work Just found out Konqueror crashes when USB media are attached Korganizer has some issues
Right now I consider moving to SuSE who have an official KDE3 repos.
Don't mean to nag but I need a usable system.

OpenSUSE is the latest stable from November 2011 - that's more or less at the same time as Ubuntu Oneiric. And that is supported for 3.5.13. Using the nightly build as stable is really not a good idea. As I mentioned earlier, I plan to prepare 3.5.13.1 for Precise. But until after the officially 3.5.13.1 released as the final (which I expect in the order of days).

Glad to hear that. Oneiric was a horrible, horrible mess. I basically upgraded from 10.10 simply because its support ran out and was expecting a few bumps maybe, but what I got with 11.10 was pre-alpha. Kernel freezes, performance dropouts that spiraled into a standstill, application crashes, hardware problems and whatnot.
Dex
I recommend using the stable releases not the nightly builds for obvious reasons.

Then don't use nightly builds!! They are still under development, and are more-or-less bound to be "a mess". Use the stable release and stick to supported versions of Ubuntu, and you will get on better. (11.10 with 3.5.13, I think. I am a Debian user.)

11.10 - see my other mail in this thread. In short: unusable.

Yes, as I said, I am a Debian user. This sort of thing is partly why! :-)
But nightly bulids would not claim to be stable or complete.

Figures. But if I had to switch distros (which I won't have to thanks to Slavek) I'd go with one that officially maintains KDE3 anyway, and the only one I know of is SuSE.
Debian stable just isn't a good desktop distro. Either it's outdated or you include backports which means they are not as thoroughly tested as the mainline packages or you go testing if you dare partake in a ride that might get bumpy.

In your opinion, of course. I disagree.

In general the Testing ride appears to be less bumpy than many recent releases of Ubuntu at the time of release. E.g. 11.10??
You say that you are thinking of switching to OpenSUSE as though it were a threat. No one minds if you switch. That is one of the many joys of Linux. We can all chose for ourselves which way we want to go.
But anyway, you say that Slávek solved your issues, so where is the problem?

*sigh*
Debian stable is not a good desktop dist *in my opinion*. There.

Still 11.10 is somewhat of a release which means third party vendors will recognize it, more or less. The list of certified software for debian testing is, well, short.

Going to, not has, and I didn't know of his approach when I started the thread.
