Hi,
It seems I'm still not able to sign up to Bugzilla. I don't get the sign up e-mail when I fill in my address.
The reason the Kubuntu KDM theme doesn't show, is because the directory kdm-settings in the source and when installed /etc/default/kdm.d is missing from kubuntu-default-settings-kde3. Is there a reason this was removed? It would be nice if it could be added back, so the Kubuntu theme in KDM would work again.
Thanks, Julius
Hi Julius,
That directory was removed because it *completely* breaks the ability to change the theme to anything else.
Have you tried installing kdmtheme and selecting the Kubuntu theme from the Control Center?
Tim

Hi Tim,
Are you sure about that? I looked at the init script and it seems to do a grep on the kdm config file. When you use the theme selector, it should override the value causing the grep to fail and not include the default theme.

Hi Julius,
I'll have to look into it further, but no, it wasn't working on any of the machines I have access to. Maybe I missed something.

Hi Tim,
On Hardy it seems to work properly with the script. (Seems I was mistaken on how it exactly works in my earlier mail.)
After I used kdmtheme on Hardy I got an extra file /etc/default/kde.d/30_kubuntu_default_settings, which contained the settings for the new theme.
In Karmic, kdmtheme-kde3 changes the file /etc/kde/kdm/kdmrc directly however, which doesn't work together with the init script.
I also noticed an extra kubuntu_02_confchanges.diff patch for kdmtheme in the Hardy source which is not Karmic source. I guess this may change kdmtheme so it works with the scheme from the init script and kubuntu-default-settings.

Hi Julius,
The problem should now be fixed; I have altered the /etc/kde3/kdm/kdmrc file to use the kubuntu-kde3 theme by default.

The packages are still broken. For example trying to install KDE3 removes any Qt3 applications previously installed such as Gambas and HBasic. Removing KDE3 also removes all Qt3 applications (including Gambas).
Not compatible with nvidia-190 drivers, tries to remove them upon KDE3 install.

Works with neither nvidia nor ATI cards for me. To be fair, I am convinced all/most of the problems are due to the underlying Ubuntu (rushed and botched) distro. Hopefully by 9.10.2 things will improve. An aside - Karmic Koala has got to be the oxymoron-of-the-decade! For those of you that have never had to handle one of those dirty, scruffy, smelly, scratchy, piddly animals, I can assure you that there are few thing with a less attractive karma.

The same problems were with Jaunty KDE3 release. So nothing new, just still not fixed.

I respectfully disagree. I installed KDE3 on top of the Ubuntu-9.04 jaunty (GNOME) and it went very smoothly. I never installed KDE4. However some KDE4 libraries got somehow installed but caused no problems. Cannot comment on Karmic.

Why on earth did it never occur to me that one doesn't have to start with *K*ubuntu in the first place...
There are no install media with only kde3 by chance?

Not really, but you can follow the instructions here to upgrade from your 8.04 installation: https://wiki.kubuntu.org/Kubuntu/Kde3/Karmic#Upgrade%20from%208.04%20%5BHard...]

I know, but the idea of not introducing any kde4 packages into the system intrigued me.
Wait, if you downloaded the Intrepid disc, then the Jaunty disc, and then the Karmic disc, and did all the respective upgrades only using the KDE3.5 remix disc for the repository, wouldn't that work? I'm sure there's just something I don't know about here, though, but it *sounds* like it would work.

I tried several times to get removed from this mailing-list, but it didn't work. (I sent an empty mail to kubuntu-kde3.5-users-unsubscribe@pearsoncomputing.net and another one to the following "confirm unsubscribe"-mail)
Could someone (Tim) please do it manually?
Cheers, Andreas

So try to install Gambas and then KDE3.

Why not KDE3 first and *then* Gambas ??
Then try to remove KDE3. It will remove Gambas and other Qt3 applications as well.
The point is that all Qt3 apps removed on both installation and deinstallation of KDE3.

If you use synaptic package manager you have a fine-grained control of what gets removed. Under "Custom Filters -> Marked Changes" you can uncheck the packages slated for removal before hitting "apply" button. Linux is still by and large a manually controlled OS. With apt-get, dpkg and synaptic you can control your installed base to a great degree.
--Leo--
No you cannot uncheck removal of those packages without refusal to unstall kde3.
Even aptitude does not help.
