I find high irony that my namesake on this list has diametrically opposed views to myself as to how the users on this list should behave. Although I’m not fond of fascism in any form, lets force some middle ground anyway. (Again, the irony is strong...)
Some background and realities first though.
1) This list has always had a huge amount of “off topic” correspondence. It is what makes this list enjoyable to many (possibly most) of the members. 2) Everyone on this list uses an email program that allows message filtering to enable their off vs. on topic desires.
So, being the fascist I don’t like being, if you wish to create, or reply with, an “off topic” message to this list, please include, at the end of the subject line the completely disambiguous filterable keyword:
[offtopic]
The END.
(Not that “The END” will stop any of you from expressing your opinions one way or the other, so do remember to change your reply’s subject line to: “Let the war end, off vs. on topic [offtopic]”)
Best Regards All, (yes even to Mike) Michael

The simple solution to all this, other than wiping the human race off the Earth (we borg are for this), is to create an off topic mailing list with stone solid rules of respect and civility.
My 2 cent opinion,
Kate disappears into the mysterious mist of confusion.

Hi Kate,
That was actually the first thing I thought of before publishing my "solution." The reason I didn’t go with it, is:
- Divides the list in two. - There would be so many technical posts solely on the off topic list, it’d make the on topic list pointless. - Because of 1&2, there would be a huge number of duplicate posts (e.g. posting same thing to both lists). - People adding one client filter is a huge amount of less work for Slávek and the other list admins. - I do think we already have a pretty good set of (unpublished) community values handling respect and civility. [1] - And to that end, the off topic posters (in the past) have been pretty good about adding tags to their subject lines.
No solution is going to be perfect, what I’m forcing on the list is “just better” (and accommodates everyone) than the one Mike keeps trying to force. Well, that’s obviously my opinion...
If someone else can come up with something better (for everyone!, not just a minority, or even a majority), then by all means let them speak up!
Best, Michael
[1] I’ve never seen anyone one on the list every call somebody else a name. Mike and I have possibly gotten close to that, but I don’t think either of us has ever let this extremely long term disagreement influence how we respect each other’s skills or even persons.

I am not for any absolute rules or perfect solutions. There is no such thing.
I agree with both Mikes (or Michaels), at least in part. But it's just common sense, that we ought to avoid getting too deep into certain topics or subjects. No good can come of this. A few random comments here are okay, but if we take the bait, then this always happens.
And we end up with dozens of posts about stuff that we've already ranted about dozens of times before, and nothing will ever get resolved or come out of it.
If we cannot come to a general consensus just to play nice and try to get along (and we all usually do), then I must join Kate and the Borg, and agree that the human race is evil and must be destroyed.
If you don't believe that human beings are evil, and a scourge to the planet, just ask any of the thousands of species of animals and other life that we have made extinct. (Oh yeah, I guess you can't ask them, because they're all DEAD!)
In the past I have suggested using a chat client, or IRC, or having a forum with specific off-topic rooms, etc. But again, nothing ever comes of this. If anybody would like to create such a place where we can get off-topic, go crazy, let our freak flags fly ... then I think those persons ought to get busy and start creating it. (I myself have things to do that are more urgent, and claim most of my attention.)
Otherwise, I believe we have to make do with what we have. And the mailing list really isn't all that bad; at least, not until one of you says something that is totally stupid and wrong.
;-)
But hey, we sometimes slip up and let our human feelings show through. Nothing wrong with that, but we ought to express those sentiments elsewhere (myself included).

Forbidding off-topic posts in general will probably kill the list. It isn't as though it's high-traffic to begin with.
"No politics/current events not related to technology (even as jokes)" is a rule we can reasonably make, though.
