I'm testing TDE 4:14.1.0 from PSB.
At least twice a "Device Manager" has appeared in my "Panel" (part of my Kicker setup along with the "Main Panel" and the "External Taskbar").
This Device Manager features two volumes: one is /boot/efi and another which I suspect is a Windows Recovery partition from when the laptop was first purchased.
I REALLY don't want this "Device Manager" appearing and confusing and tempting end users.
This "Device Manager" is not listed when I right click to "Remove From Panel" / Applet or Application.
How please do I prevent this "Device Manager" from appearing here?
Thanks,
--Mike

Since nobody else is answering ... I kept trying to determine what you mean by "Device Manager" in the lower panel (or kicker). I can only guess that somehow you have right-clicked and added an applet: either "System Menu" or "Storage Media"?
In any case, if we are talking about the same thing: then you only need to right-click to unlock the lower panel. Hover the mouse over the icon for this item, and you ought to see a small arrow, either directly above, or sometimes to one side, of that icon. Click (or right-click) on that, and you will see a menu with a few otions. (Don't know why, but some icons need right-click, others reveal this menu with left-click.) Among the options are to move the icon (which usually screws up everything else in my lower panel, and also just to remove.)
Once you have got rid of the intruder, remember to right-click and lock your lower panel. Otherwise, I find, things tend to move around and get messed up.

Hi Bill,
Thank you but that's not it. It is not listed among the apps or applications I can remove from the panel. It appears there on its own at boot.
Or now I look more closely I believe it's not appearing directly in the panel but rather in the system tray which is in the panel.
So my question might be how do I stop this device manager from autostarting and appearing in the system tray in 14.1.0 which was not doing this in 14.0.13? More specifically: in 14.1.0 I have an instance of tdehwdevicetray running which is not there in 14.0.13.

Screen cap so we can see what you're talking about?
And what's on its About?
Best, Michael

Screen cap attached. Left is TDE background, center is Panel, right is Main Panel. There's also an External Toolbar which is not shown. The green thing with the blue circle with the white "i" is the thing of interest. Mouse is hovering over it in order to display tooltip.
And what's on its About?
The About calls it "Device Monitor 0.1" and the tooltip as shown in the screen cap shows "Device Monitor". Otherwise it contains lots of mentions of "Device Manager". Maybe this thing monitors devices and offers to invoke Device Manager on volumes which are not mounted. Specifically it is a tdehwdevicetray process.

I sorta figured that you would have already discovered those other suspects.
Okay, so I don't have a solution, but I did come up with a little more info, just by poking around my own system. The item in question is apparently named tdehwdevicetray; so, on the assumption that it was actually an app that could be uninstalled, then reinstalled again,
I tried to uninstall it, got the message "Unable to locate package tdehwdevicetray"; so I thought, maybe it's part of some other package, and I tried to remove it as tdehwdevicetray*, but still no luck. I tried searching for it by apt-cache search, still nothing.
For what it's worth, I included a screenshot of where it occurs in my start menu, but otherwise I am striking out.

tdehwdevicetray isn't part of Trinity R14.0.13 (that was probably a given)
Mike, try these commands:
# which tdehwdevicetray # dpkg -S {full path to tdehwdevicetray}
That should tell you which package owns the file.
If that doesn't work, then try 'ps aux | grep tdehw' or the like to track it down.
Best, Michael

And the answer is: kcontrol-trinity

How please do I prevent this "Device Manager" from appearing here?
Hi Mike, right click on the device monitor icon, select Quit, a small dialog appears and ask if the device monitor should be started again at login, choose "Do not start". Done. If it still shows up at the next login, let us know because it would mean there is a bug. But by experience, it should just work fine :-)
Cheers Michele

That fixed it. Thank you Michele.

There is also PTB: Preliminary Testing Builds https://wiki.trinitydesktop.org/Preliminary_Testing_Builds
Both PSB and PTB are rolling builds, so they update continuously. PSB tracks the next stable build, while PTB tracks the main development branch.
So far PSB have tracked the R14.0.x series and PTB R14.1.0-development. With the release of R14.1.0 coming in few weeks, PSB has now switched to track the R14.1.x series, while PTB will switch to R14.2.0-development from next month (May). At the present time, PSB and PTB are the same, but only for few more weeks.
They are only available for limited .deb based distros. PSB is extremely stable and could safely be used on a daily basis. PTB is very stable, but from time to time we need to make changes that may break things for a short while. In that case we usually warn in advance on the ML and as long as you hold back updates till the issue is resolved, PTB is still very usable. With the advent of TGW and pull requests, the number of breakages has highly reduced in the last few years.
Cheers Michele
