Hi,
I will setup a Lenovo T410i laptop which has a nvidia grafic card. The
laptop should use additioaly second monitor when in the docking station
and of course expand the gui across both screens.
The (original) driver can't handle this - allways assumes both motiors
are connected. So I installed the nouvea driver and get trouble with tdm.
Tdm starts and I see the clock for a short time and then tdm terminates
and a text only terminal login is shown. When login and call "startx", I
get a working trinity session and the crash report manager is shown.
So my question is "where can I look for error messages of tdm" or has
some one else an idea or a solution for the problem?

the log-file path is:
/var/log/tdm.log
i have a running/working multi-head (three monitors) setup with TDE and a
Nvidia-Card, but i'm using the proprietary driver from http://nvidia.com/ and
not nouveau. I only use nouveau for older cards.
Are you using nvidia-settings, or krandr? I used nvidia-settings.

For us to help with any detail we need to know which operating system version
and hardware you have. These would help:
lspci -nnk | grep -A4 VGA (only tells about your video hardware)
hwinfo --gfxcard (more detailed video hardware info)
hwinfo --monitor (detailed display info)
inxi -c0 -v6 | head -n20 (fairly comprehensive)
~/.xsession-errors (tde log)
/var/log/Xorg.0.log (log of X server operation, also Xorg.1.log if it exists)

I use debian jessie on a lenovo thinkpad T410i. It has the GT218M Nvidia
chip build in.
On of the problems (crash of tderander) can be found and solved as follow:
From some play with tderander the files .trinity/share/config/display*
have been created - perhaps with errors. When started the gui with
startx I get a SegVault error. After deleting the files tde starts
without crash of tdrander. The error be could found in the function
"TQValuelistPrivate::findIndex"
I attache a strace and a gdb-backtrace for this error.
But this did not solve the problem with tdm. Here the wanted additional
informations

According to https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/documents/pd006109#vid you also
have Intel gfx, which lspci -nnk | grep -A4 VGA missed showing.
That means you need a special (optimus or bumblebee) driver instead of the
generic nouveau, nouveau or intel FOSS Xorg drivers that your Xorg logs show in
use.
Mine with only GeForce on host big31 running Jessie with 4.9 kernel:

Main difference between our gfxchips is that yours is mobile and connects to bus
differently, but I'd expect same behavior.

I get the same result with xserver-xorg-video-modesetting installed and with or
without xserver-xorg-video-nouveau installed.
I don't think I can suggest anything more that might be helpful, since I have no
hardware requiring either of those special drivers.
