hi, I try to configure an hybrid system based on:
kubuntu-18.04 (without akonadi-kmail-mysqld) and install kmail+dependencies from triniy-desktop
I insert into:
$HOME/.trinity/share/config/kdeglobals
BrowserApplication[$e]=!/usr/bin/firefox JpgApplication[$e]=!/usr/bin/gwenview PdfApplication[$e]=!/usr/bin/okular
but when I read an email (in trinity-kmail) only links to urls work fine
what is wrong?
thank you

What do you mean, "only links to urls work fine"?
What other sort of links are there?
What happens to the ones that don't work fine?
What do you expect them to do?
only if I click over url firefox starts and open the site
If I click over .pdf or .jpg attachments it ask how open them
thanks

You have a set of TDE configurations. You probably have a set of Gnome configurations. And if you're going to run KDE stuff, you need KDE configurations. In this case, it appears you haven't set default applications for KDE. If you have latter-day KDE installed, the command is systemsettings5. -- dep

You need to open the KDE -- not TDE -- system settings application. Navigate to "File Associations" and type in "jpg," then set the application you'd have open when you click on a .jpg in a KDE application. You'll notice from the list that you're not limited to choosing KDE applications. Likewise, type in "pdf" and choose the default application for that. -- dep

What happens if you click on a file of either of those types in Konqueror? Same problem?
In which case open kcontrol, the TDE configurator, and do what I described for current KDE applications:

You aren't using TDE correct? What desktop are you using? Whatever it is, your question should be posted on their help list/forum.

I could swear -- please correct me if I'm wrong -- that the subject of this thread is "hibrid system plasma+tde."
I could further swear -- again, if I'm error I'll happily stand corrected -- that the OP began:
"I try to configure an hybrid system based on:
"kubuntu-18.04 (without akonadi-kmail-mysqld) and install kmail+dependencies from triniy-desktop"
Now. Seems to me -- once more, my opinion could be incorrect -- that questions having to do with trinity desktop might well belong on the -- why, lookee there: TDE Users! -- list.
(I'd further mention, and I think I'm right in saying this, that one of the pleasures of this list is that it is remarkable free of internet coppery, such that we can for example debate the merits of various cables besed on their color, which I'm pretty sure is not a TDE-specific issue. Much of the internet shits first and asks directions to the toilet later, but this list is happily not among them.) -- dep

:) dep,
it says "install kmail+dependencies from triniy-desktop." "+dependencies from triniy-desktop" implies the person not in fact using TDE but whatever other desktop is default installed in kubuntu. Throw in the plasma reference and they are using KDE 4+?
So the question as the OP wrote it seems to translate, "How does a stand alone TDE application integrates with some other desktop?"

It does quite well, when you set the environment correctly and start some daemons - I did it for FVWM :)

Inasmuch as he was complaining as to the behavior of kmail-trinity -- how it does not open files in the applications he wants it to open in -- then it is a TDE concern.
I do not know your setup, but here, I need to set file associations and such separately depending on whether it's a TDE, KDE, or Gnome application -- I have some of all three running. For KMail, the file associations I have set must be set in KControl's file associations; likewise, they need to be set in the KDE configurator for those applications, and in Gnome for those.
So people who have problems with kmail-trinity would rightly come here, because here is the only place that would have the correct answer. -- dep

I think maybe that he, like a lot of us sometimes, did not read every word in every email in that thread, and gave undue weight to the words KDE, Plasma, and their related krap.
Or, it could be, he is a TDE purist: Thou shalt have no other desktops besides Trinity!
At some point in the future, I would like to become a member of this second group, because other desktops don't play nicely, and leftover garbage from every one of them have caused me problems, large and small. But it is easier for me install Devuan using the mate or xfce desktops.
Then, too, there are persons who actually *like* to try out other desktops, and (so I have heard) seem to think that KDE4/5 and Plasma and the Gnomes and such are actually "good"; which puzzles me, but I accept that they know what they like, even if they do like krap. It is not for me to judge them.

Indeed, why would you run other desktops? I personally run only TDE and have Gnome and KDE applications running as well.
Regarding default applications there is this here https://specifications.freedesktop.org/mime-apps-spec/1.0.1/index.html
and if TDE is not complying to this, we should be working in this direction, which I can not say, because I do not use another desktop. However when I right click an attachment in KMail, I have the option to choose "Open with..." and then associate the MIME-type with specific TDE application.
Perhaps it is just a matter of time for everybody to comply to the Freedesktop specs, but remember that TDE existed before those specs were written and the others may implement slightly different versions of these specs.
when I login in plasma-kde, kcontrol is empy when I login in TDE kcontrol is populated
maybe this is solution ... to enter into TDE at login

This is what I run on FVWM. Open a terminal in your DE, execute:
export TDE_FULL_SESSION=false export TDEHOME=$HOME/.trinity export TDEROOTHOME=/root/.trinity export TDE_SESSION_UID=$UID export TDE_MULTIHEAD=false export TDEDIR=/opt/trinity export XDG_CONFIG_DIRS=/opt/trinity/etc/xdg export XDG_DATA_DIRS=/opt/trinity/share:/usr/local/share:/usr/share tdeinit_shutdown tdeinit
Now you should be able to use any TDE application as if you had a fill TDE running. If it works, put these lines in your .xsessionrc (if your DE follws the standard this will be executed on sesion setup). You might want to check if $XDG_CONFIG_DIRS and $XDG_DATA_DIRS are set already. If they are, you have to adjust the lines, e.g.

export XDG_CONFIG_DIRS=$XDG_CONFIG_DIRS:/opt/trinity/etc/xdg export XDG_DATA_DIRS=$XDG_DATA_DIRS:/opt/trinity/share:/usr/local/share:/usr/s hare

Indeed, why would you run other desktops? I personally run only TDE and have Gnome and KDE applications running as well.
Regarding default applications there is this here https://specifications.freedesktop.org/mime-apps-spec/1.0.1/index.h tml
and if TDE is not complying to this, we should be working in this direction, which I can not say, because I do not use another desktop.

Out of curiosity, why would you run TDE applications under Plasma rather than the other way around?
Here, I have to use some later KDE applications because they include features not in existence when their TDE analogues were effectively feature frozen -- digiKam, Gwenview, KDenLive. But on the one machine where I have current KDE installed I've found no advantage to KDE and in fact considerable complication with no corresponding benefit. So I am genuinely curious as to the rationale for choosing the Plasma desktop with TDE applications over the other way around.
(The reason I have Plasma running on one machine is that it's a special case, a GPD Pocket, which despite many days of effort -- memorialized in the archives of this list -- failed to run TDE reliably. I suspect but do not know that it was a touchscreen issue.) -- dep

I have tried kubuntu-18.04 original, but akonadi tasks and kmail task and mysqld tasks use 100% of cpu, and writes too much to the disk

And now that you've tried it, you can nuke it and use TDE and be happy! If you need and KDE (or Gnome) applications, you can install and use them. -- dep

I use xfce or mate when I am installing Devuan; but after I get TDE packages installed, then I try to purge everything that is non-TDE. Only sometimes do I inadvertently install gnustep or gnome, because I want temporarily want some package that somehow requires it. Then I purge it again.
Regarding default applications there is this here https://specifications.freedesktop.org/mime-apps-spec/1.0.1/index.html
and if TDE is not complying to this, we should be working in this direction, which I can not say, because I do not use another desktop.
I agree. While I don't want to use other desktops, I do sometimes want to use some of their packages. It is just plain silly that -- in order to use only a couple items -- I must install a whole other desktop.
It would help to improve TDE's public image, too. I don't know how it is now, but I remember that a few years ago there was a lot of bad talk on various "distro watch" sites, about how we were stuck in the past, a dinosaur, etc.
Now, it seems to me, it was good, and it just keeps getting better, and I regard them (i.e., the users of the newer KDE5 Plasma and Gnome and the others out there) with pity. It is beyond me why anybody would want to use them.
Bill
