I just upgraded my Debian to Wheezy and I am surprised to see that KNetworkManager can't be installed. I recall reading something about it in the past on this list and I also remember that R14 is supposed to have a solution for this. I looked throughthe list archives, but couldn't find a solutions. So three questions:
1. What applet can I use for managing network connections?
2. Should I give up on network-manager altogether?
3. What is the reason for this situation (yes, I am interested in developer's perspective)?

wicd is the only choice, I think. But you have to uninstall network-manager, or it'll run in the background and cause trouble for wicd.
I hope network-manager is fixed in R14, as I prefer it to wicd.
Thank you for responses. I am using wicd at the moment and it seems to work.
- Hold the network-manager-kde-trinity and network-manager from Squeeze
I wouldn't mind that. The question is if I can go back to old network-manager once I upgraded to the new one?
- Use a different application - for example nm-applet
I would love to use nm-applet, but for some reason the icon does not show properly in the taskbar - see the attached screenshot (which I hope will make it to the list). Should I report this as a trinity bug?

Yes, a return is possible. Add to your apt sources lines for squeeze (both - debian and Trinity) and in the aptitude manually select squeeze version of packages.

The nm-applet bug is not a TDE problem. Some gnome tray apps from that time period have a problem with reading the tray icon size.

fwiw, i use wicd all the time, after *years* of anguish with knm. in more than a decade i've never gotten knm to work as it says on the tin. and never had wicd fail.
I found that it's possible to install Network Manager from Squeeze, but I don't recommend it as it may cause some dependency problems. In my case, this dependency hell went up to GTK, making Zenity, Audacious etc. unusable, so I had to reinstall and find something other. I've found that Wicd, which I'm using for wired/home Wi-fi, doesn't work with my university network (Eduroam), so I have Wicd for normal, wireless connectivity and a script which starts WPA supplicant for university network. I've read in mail header that You're from University, if You have Eduroam (it's an universal site in many universities), have You found any method of authenticating it in Wicd? MCbx

:( This makes me sad, especially that on old KDE 3.5 it used to work flawlessly.

I am currently at home, but I will try eduroam next week. I'll report back if I succeed.
Anyway, I am anxiously waiting for R15 to be released since then the whole problem will just go away, right?

Certificate (at least at AGH University) doesn't need to be converted any way, there are some old tutorials with converting certiciate file, they're outdated. I hope this Kopete bug with Gadu-Gadu protocol will be fixed in next release too, especially that there's something like a patch from earlier KDE, I think it can be incorporated into source (but I have no idea how to build and test it). It's quite boring to remove empty contacts from list again and again. MCbx

To solve applet for network-manager in Debian 7.x (Wheezy) are three possible solutions:
1) Hold the network-manager-kde-trinity and network-manager from Squeeze 2) Use a different application - for example nm-applet 3) Update Trinity to nightly-builds

The nightly buids, aka R14, has network-manager-tde, this works well.
