Hi, I'm currently running KDE3 in openSUSE 12.2, but I'm considering converting to TDE. The instructions on your download page don't say anything about migration considerations. Will the configuration information in my .kde directory be used by TDE after the conversion, and if not, is there a procedure for importing that data into TDE?
Thanks,
Leslie

First time I did according to (not official):
Before you login into TDE, switch to tty[1-6] and login as user. Then, 'cp -a .kde .trinity', go back to login window, log into TDE, and look around. If you don't like it, logout, go back to ttyX, and 'rm -r .trinity' to start fresh. If you do the fresh start you may want to copy or import only certain portions of .kde, such as kmail data.

OK I will write instructions on the Trinity's wiki about switching from KDE3 to Trinity.
The important thing is that you can have both of them working at the same time. If you want to use one, you must uninstall the other.
In short: - install Trinity, following the instructions on the wiki - From a text console, remove at least "kdelibs3" package; but it's better to remove all packages from KDE3. (I don't know all of them) - There is no automatic profile migration (yet ?). As Felix suggests, just try to copy your ".kde" folder to ".trinity" and see if it works. If not, you must remove ".trinity" and start from a new profile.

*Must* uninstall? I thought TDE co-existed with KDE (3 or 4).

Do you mean as a necessity, or just to remove unused code? (I have TDE installed on Mageia-2 (KDE4), but did not realise I *must* uninstalll anything!
Or are you simply referring to *sole* use of TDE, when KDE code is not needed?

Probably will with 4, as KDE3 does.

Did you see this thread? http://trinity-users.pearsoncomputing.net/?0::4119

No - I did not join this list until Dec.2.
But that thread puzzles me when it says:
"KDE3 conflicts with TDE. Until we find a trick, we cannot use both on the same computer."
as it contradicts what Francois just said:
"...you can have both of them working at the same time." !
So far I am quite happy with TDE on Mageia-2, but I wish I had known about your suggestion earlier today:
"Before you login into TDE, switch to tty[1-6] and login as user. Then, 'cp -a .kde .trinity', go back to login window, log into TDE, and look around"!
I have been delaying moving to Mageia-2 because of the poor state of the Akonadified KMail, but now with TDE installed I am hoping - after trying TDE for a while - to move over to Mageia-2 permanently.
I am assuming I don't *need* to remove any of KDE4...

Sorry I made a mistake by answering too fast . You should read: "you can NOT have both at the same time".

This trick mayl work only with a KDE3 profile (Nowadays, only people using openSUSE are concerned I think). If you try it with a KDE4 profile (I think you have KDE4 since you are using Mageia 2), I think it will not work at all.

No you don't need to remove anything from KDE4. The conflict exists only with opensuse's KDE3. There are no problem with KDE4, in any distribution.

I don't recall any distro I've seen where $HOME had either a .kde3 or a .kde4 directory, except:
1-openSUSE 2-.kde4 on Mandriva & Mageia
Maybe I have seen .kde4 elsewhere and just don't remember. On openSUSE, KDE3 is .kde is KDE, and KDE4, the KDE wannabe and reason for Trinity's existence, is .kde4.

It is possible to try migratekde3 script. Not yet contained in v3.5.13.x branch - you must use the current version from GIT:
http://git.trinitydesktop.org/cgit/tdebase/tree/migratekde3

Thank you all for your helpful advice. I will try removing KDE3 and installing Trinity, copying .kde to .trinity, and see what happens.
