Hi All,
Four quick questions to see if Slávek, Mike, myself, et al. should pursue creating an easy (NAT VPS / home TDE mirror) setup.

Even if you don’t think you’ll be able to help out with this, please do take the poll as the info will be useful for future TDE decisions.
Best All, Michael

Hi Michael,
I won't be taking the poll as the lowest upload bandwidth in the poll is more than a factor of fifty above my bandwidth.
Our DSL is carried on what should be obsolete rural POTS wires which short out when it rains heavily but on the plus side we have a nice garden with resident frogs and visiting coyotes.
The image shows available DSL bandwidth. Actual measured IP bandwidth is usually a little less: around 11Mbps/0.8Mbps.

Hello Michael,
Sorry for stupid question, but could you please clarify those $10 from the last question? Is it a per month or a year?
Cheers,

Hi Maciej,
It would be less than US $10 per year. Sorry for the confusion I didn't have anyone do an edit :(
I tried to update the question to include that, but IDK if it took. It's one of those free things without a login/pass, so ???
Best, Michael

I don't have a computer running all the time, but it could be done if this computer does not have to be too powerfull.
I'd need a lot of explanations how to let this be accessed behind a firewall, but it could certainly be done.

Hi Thierry,
Slávek will be the one to give definitive specs, but all the ‘home server’ needs to do is run a web server and have space for the files Slávek wants/needs to support TDE.
A Raspberry Pi is sufficient to do this with. My hazy memory (18 months ago) is Slávek wanted something like 1 or 2 TB [1] of space for all the TDE ‘stuff.’
My prior reference to using an Oracle VM is that is what I’d use, since my computer is way over normal specs, already runs 24/7, and it’d be easiest for me to just leave a VM running in the background. Then again, thinking of using a Pi is not a bad thing, I might go the Pi route as I wanted to ‘play’ with one anyway.
I'd need a lot of explanations how to let this be accessed behind a firewall, but it could certainly be done.
That part (port forwarding) isn’t really that hard, but yes Slavik, Mike?, and/or myself would provide those instructions. If we get enough interest, I’d do mine first and be able to create a concrete instruction set from that.
Best, Michael

I do have a few raspi around. Adding a SSD would be easy.
Yes, its not that hard. On the rpi4, I have a StarTech usb3<->sata adapter plugged into each usb2 port, with a 240GB SSD plugged into the 1st adapter, and a 120GB into the second adapter. Mounted in /etc/fstab.
Using that 240GB as workspace, I can build a fresh realtime kernel in under 30 minutes, and can build my own copy of linuxcnc from a git pull from master on github in around an hour if the if the linuxcnc buildbot has a tummy ache.
I also have a couple rock64's on my local net, running octoprint to manage a couple 3d printers.
But so far they are running from 64GB u-sd's. Slower of course. When I get both of those completed, they are a work in progress, I'll try an SSD on those. The function of the rock64's single usb3 port is reported to be hit and miss, but its my observation the miss goes away when using the StarTech adaptors on the rpi4b's.
My biggest problem is my 10 megabaud cable connections 250kb upload bandwidth.

Yes, upload may be a problem (quantity, not speed). If this project becomes reallity, upload limits is something I should check. I'd be ready to pay for some more upload capacities, but there is a limit.
I remember experiencing servers that told me that I had used the amount of download allowed for the day and to come back later. It would be good not to have the risk of upsetting my internet provider.

Thierry .
The odd thing about that is that my bandwidth allowance, 750 GB allowed seems to be calculated by assuming a full pipe both ways, 24/7/365. Most months I'm under 30GB for the whole month.
