Okay, so I managed to install Devuan Chimaera on my laptop. (Suddenly I remember why I hate other desktops!) After I got the system set up, I tried install the basic Trinity packages. (I copied my list from my desktop, which is Beowulf, but I changed my sources.list over to Chimaera/Bullseye.) I expect that some packages will change, but I keep a list of what I install, and in what order, so that it's easier to move over to a new machine. Or so one hopes ...
So when I tried to install the basic Trinity packages, I kept getting an error message about unmet dependencies. Gradually I whittled down my list to just three packages: tde-trinity tdebase-trinity tdm-trinity. But I keep getting this same error message.
The follow packages have unmet dependencies: tdemultimedia-trinity : Depends: libarts1-xine-trinity (>=4:14.0.11-0debian11.0.0.+0) but it is not installable
But nowhere am I (yet) trying to install either of these packages! Maybe they are included in one of those that I am trying to install, but this message doesn't make sense.
Help please ...
Bill

Did you try a dry run on libarts1-xine-trinity to see what that gives you?

Thanks for that quick response.
Actually, my plodding stupidity has managed to resolve this part of the mystery pretty quickly.
I do recall some others on the list recommending that I use aptitude instead of just apt-get. But old habits die hard, y'know? I've tried it before, but never realized much advantage, and I like working with my stone tools.
Anyway, so aptitude got rid of this snag. Once I have rebooted into my Trinity desktop, and get a little further into building a new system, we'll see how it goes.

Oh yeah, duh, about Whonix. I wasn't sure that you were the same Michael, because that email didn't give your surname.
I played around with Whonix, and I would like to keep trying, but while I have time to build a new machine and move my stuff around, I do eventually have to move out of here, and that means that I will need a working laptop for travel. I tried out the new Debian, but I keep forgetting about the non-free packages. For some reason, Devuan has managed to make this part easier, by providing that choice in the installation process. With Debian, I have to search for the discs with non-free packages, or try to figure out what my wireless requires.
Interesting to me is that I don't recall using *any* non-free packages when installing my desktop. And then I remembered, I have an old C.Crane WiFire antenna, more than ten years old, a little beat-up from travel, but still going strong. But my desktop can't plug in anywhere, so that's how I get my wifi to work here. I only need those zd1211 packages, whatever they're called, and I am good to go. So when I pack up my desktop and move everything over to my laptop, it will be interesting to see if I can use just my antenna without any non-free packages.

Hi Bill,
I must say I'm confused...
Why not just install the entire TDE ecosystem and be done with it?
sudo apt-get update sudo aptitude install tde-trinity
Sure you've installed crap you might never use, but it's just disk space? Even if you kept the 128 GB SSD, it's just not going to matter?
Did I miss something?
Best, Michael

I don't so much mind downloading unneeded packages, as I can always delete them, and cut them out of the loop in later installations. What I mind is getting a message that doesn't make sense. I never tried to install those packages.
Anyway, yeah, if there is a way to download ALL of Trinity, without picking through the packages, that would make life simpler. When I started doing this, it was apt-get only, and I built my system by hit-and-miss, picking and choosing. But now that I've got it running, I still like to know what goes into making the sausage; I don't just want to trust that everything gets installed without being able to inspect it.
Regarding private emails, no problem, except I don't recall it. Just now got the private email dated today; if there is another on that date, then maybe it got marked as spam, or got sent into the Trinity mailing list folder, but I did catch it.
Let's see ...
