Hello,
Wicd (Wireless Interface Connection Daemon), is a very good graphic tool to connect to a WiFi, with the quality of the signal (dbm), number of bars, very pratical and easy to use...
Unfortunately, it is not implemented any more with the last Linux distributions, as Debian Bullseye...
Is it possible for the Trinity community to create a similar tool ?
Interfaces are : GTK et ncurses, and Python language, and not sure, package from Gnome desktop.
Thanks, Cheers.
André
If memory serves, I believe wicd was shipped with Devuan as their main graphic tool for the wireless.
You should have a look at Devuan if this tool is still provided; if not, you can take the last wicd package from the Debian archive and try to build It on your computer.
I don't know if wicd works with Python3/Py3GTK though...

It does not. That's the reason why it was removed :(

AIUI, it's supposed to be a transitional package to "smooth over" switching to another network manager software during dist-upgrade or installation.¹
However, there seems to be some effort to make wicd python3 compatible.²
Kind regards, Stefan

Oh, I see, so in the end no-one is providing this tool anymore, that's too bad, the UI of Wicd was so nice and intuitive.
The work on Python3 is good news overall but I doubt they keep GTK2 as they're main GUI toolkit, I guess they will be moving to GTK3 too, as a result the new Wicd(3) wouldn't have the same look and feel anyway...
@André if you expect a clone like of Wicd in tqt3, you might profit from this near Christmas time to send your gift/wishes list to TGW (https://mirror.git.trinitydesktop.org/gitea/TDE/tde/issues) because a user mail list is not really the place for this. That request of yours will be forgotten in no time here. Might takes years before a good soul steps in and fulfilled that request...
@Michele, see the work they been pouring into the move on Python3 https://git.launchpad.net/wicd/log/?h=python3 the 2to3 tool is definitely not enough to handle the workload, told you the move to Py3 code in TDE won't be made in a fortnight time frame...
I, also, preferred Wicd to Network Manager.
So sad it has gone the way of all things.

Hello,
AFAIK Wicd is unfortunately as good as dead. It hasn't been maintained since somewhere around 2014 (dommage, it is/was a really good tool). Slackware also got rid of it recently.
The best analog in TDE at the moment would be TDENetworkManager, but if you're asking about Wicd, you are probably trying to avoid NM anyway. I'm afraid most graphical tools are nowadays based on it, unlike Wicd which supported various back ends and tools and even user-defined scripts(!).
Would be definitely nice to see it coming alive, and it could probably even replace the aging KWireless(?) in tdenetwork which does not even support WPA.
Meanwhile Wicd should still work well and you can even probably find packages for it after a search or two. They host their code at Launchpad and the website pkgs.org might come useful too.

I am on the contrary opinion

thanks god, finally!

no, because there is the tdenetworkmanager or equivalent tools For me tdenetworkmanager works perfectly well on Notebook or Desktop

GTK?!?! packages from Gnome desktop???? You have to confess your sins somewhere soon and clean up your soul (joking)

Not so good than Wicd.

Everyone's taste is different. After all, there is no accounting for taste. Wicd is a jewel, convenient and easy to use, I'm disappointed that this tool has been discontinued since 2016. You are an extremist, you assert too much :-)

I see myself as pragmatic and purist. I am ready to compromise, but from what I've seen coming from the Gnome corner it was always a disappointment. The GTK apps I am using are 99% not Gnome apps. For the record I used once wicd (I think it was 2008).
I do not understand why should tdenetworkmanager or NetworkManager itself be bad. It is actively maintained and works very well. I even used it to inspect configuration of many servers in the past few years.
Of course it is your choice ... but saying wicd is cools is like saying a FIAT model 1956 is cool. I agree it is cool, but belongs in the museum :) I can only conclude you need an update ;-)

And replied much too late. Sometimes we just can't do anything right.
