Let's not annoy users and make it more difficult to search the archives.
There's plenty of appropriate forums so you don't need to discuss off topic topics here.
Thanks,

Mike,
If you are referring to the recent discussion regarding the future of this mailing list. Wanna explain how that is off topic?
If that’s not what you’re referring to, what recent topic is it that you consider off topic? If you’re just annoyed by the amount of posting about an ‘on topic’ discussion , there is nothing anyone can do about that but you. Which then makes this thread by you ‘off topic’ and an annoyance to the rest of the list.
Regards, Michael
PS: Personally I’ve never had an archive search return anything useful. Not because there was too much off topic content (cause how would that be returned?), but because the archives are structured so poorly that following a thread is near impossible.

I was referring - without naming names or giving examples because I don't want to exarcebate the situation - to the off topic posts in that thread.

Please don't try to play games with me here.
A request to cease the off topic posts on TDE mailing lists is on topic for TDE mailing lists.

Okay, since this whole thing just keeps spinning out-of-control ...
I do apologize for my rant, but I'll say that I was tired, and ought to have just gone to bed. Actually, I don't know where we first went off the rails, but it was many emails ago, and other people have certainly been party to it.
My intended point was simply that a lot of people talk about these things like they are mere theories; like it's a good idea or bad. For them, it's inconvenient or upsetting, if somebody gets their data and they find advertisements directed at them, or they find that some algorithm has got them tagged as "that sort of person" who might do this or buy that.
For me, it's real life. Bad data gets me into situations. When somebody is pointing a gun at you, and it seems the result of bad information, then maybe you will think differently about these things.
Using encryption where possible is still a good idea, I believe. It might reduce our chances of getting tagged by the algorithms.
Oh, and by the way, a forum or IRC group (in parallel with the mailing list) might avoid these kinds of things.

Thanks, Nik!
Somehow I missed that. It is only during these last few posts that I heard somebody mention it.

Strange, for me its usually the other way round: Konversation works well and KSirc I can't even get to work (complains about a "really screwed up" Perl interpreter).
Kopete also supports IRC but I haven't tried it.

I joined from Matrix, so that is still a possibility.

I have used it, without problems to access places that don't have a mailing list, like raspbian, which only has a forum. But wading around in close to 1000 threads, looking for the info you need, is to me a major pita. Much much easier to ask a mailing list where everybody sees it, and those who know answer fairly promptly. Forums, to be usefull need a search algorithm that works, and whatever is being used at raspbian doesn't work, returning almost random data. So, while it has a search, but its about as usefull as the teats on a bore hog.
Since I only delete the junk mail, I've found that kmail, searching my email corpus that goes back to 2002 for some lists, quite handy. Slow, but that can be a 12 gigabyte search.

My Debian installation (used the LXQt image for the original install) included Quassel IRC, just tried it for the first time and it connected to the channel perfectly.

Mike,

There hasn't been a discussion regarding the future of this mailing list. There were a couple suggestions made which, as replacements for the mailing list, would be completely unworkable, and then a whole bunch of posts by a few people who seem to think they'd be good ideas to replace the mailing list.
This is not a chat server where things just roll off the top and are gone forever. It's a mailing list, and that's exactly what it's supposed to be, because that's what works really well for its intended purpose. That means every single person on the list gets every single message you send as an email, and has to deal with it, even if it's just to delete it. That's why dozens and dozens of off-topic posts promoting absurd off-topic ideas are a big problem for everyone. So, will you guys PLEASE STOP. Talk about those things all you like, but please do it SOMEWHERE ELSE, like private email, where it doesn't cause problems for everyone else.
Don't we have a moderator who can put an end to things like this? Slavek? Anyone?
