Hello all :-)
I am doing a fresh install of Trinity, on a fresh install of Debian Squeeze, which so far has no GUI installed.
After I issue: aptitude install desktop-base-trinity kde-trinity
I get a list of 165 recommends and the question: do you accept this solution?
Well, I think that there are 165, but the first that I can currently see is number 147. Having dismally failed to find a way to see what I am being asked to agree to, I decided to accept all recommends, which might at least reduce the number of things on the screen and let me see what else, if anything, aptitude is telling me. (Oh, I do miss konsole!)
So I did: aptitude -r install desktop-base-trinity kde-trinity
That made no difference at all. Still a problem, still 165 recommends (as far as I can see), still: do you accept this solution? And I still don't know what "solution" it is recommending. It might be suggesting _removing_ 165 packages.
So, in case I had gone bonkers and got the order wrong I tried: aptitude install -r desktop-base-trinity kde-trinity
Same result. :-(
I am fresh out of ideas. I have had enough physical problems building this computer, without software problems as well. :-(
Help! (And thank you, of course)

Seeing this on the list gave me an idea I ought to have thought of sooner: try apt-get. I am in the process of doing so. It has listed teh [problems mor ecomprehensibly, saying what dpends on what and what isn't gouing to be installed. so I am now trying to install those packages manually.
As I say, this is a fresh install. If necessary I wipe the drives and start again.

That just brought up a whole lot of dependencies.
I don't understand this circle. Of course a lot of Trinity packages aren't there. _No_ Trinity packages are there. I can't install them. :-(

I don't know much of aptitude, I don't use it.
The "recommends" are just that, extra stuff for more functionality. Unless you have a good reason it's normally better to install them.
If you're not sure, just accept the defaults and whatever apt-get wants to do! You might be prompted a few times, when depends or recommends are needed.
Installing of "recommends" is default in Debian but you can override that if required with <apt-get install --no-install-recommends package>

It may be helpful to use the dependency resolver in aptitude's curses interface. It's much easier to look through all solutions and see what's being done to which packages when you can freely scroll, fold sections away, page back and forth through solutions, etc.

I tried now to a very clean machine (my builder == not containing anything other than the basic system). To:
aptitude install desktop-base-trinity kde-trinity
I get:
0 packages upgraded, 553 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded. Need to get 367 MB of archives. After unpacking 950 MB will be used. Do you want to continue? [Y/n/?]

That's what I expected, what had previously happened and what I did. The question is: is the problem hardware, software or mushyware (my brain)? And what do I do about it??
Thanks for your reply, Slavek. :-)

I've done that several times, and also aptitude update. I wouldn't normally use both, let alone several times, but I was getting desperate!!

It may pay to test the CD/DVD drive. I've had odd problems like this and traced it to the optical hardware.
In one instance the download was fine but the burn to a DVD turned out to be bad, but it passed verification. Checking on another machine the burnt disk failed MD5.
Since then I've made a point of comparing the MD5 given by K3B with the reference
One way of checking the optical drive is to test a known good DVD by having the disk check itself and comparing the checksums.
HTH.

Thanks, Baron. Yes, I always do that too. But this is actually a USB-key. And it it is the installation from the net that I am having trouble with.

Mmm. Two things spring to mind. Download corruption because of a bad network card or poor cable connections on the Ethernet connectors. Try replacing the cable.
If you are using a WiFi connection there may be an interfering signal on the channel you are using. The quick way to check is to change the chanel that your router is transmitting on.
Though I have seen routers/modems that have had bad power supplies cause corrupt downloads.
I'm curious to learn what you actually find the problem to be.

Thanks, Baron. Yes, I thought of the cable.
After reading your suggestion, I have ordered a new network card because the network card is indeed an old one. I couldn't install with the on-board one because the driver is not in the Squeeze install. I was concentrating on the basic problem, and installed an old network card so that the driver would indeed be supplied by the installer.
I am beginning to wonder whether I damaged the motherboard when I was installing it. :-(
Thanks for your help, Lisi
Lisi, your original post was you were unsure about the "recommends" of packages to be installed, we already said you probably do want them. If no network, how can apt have processed that much?
You will see from <apt-get update> whether you got network! If not, that's a non-starter.
If the problem is actually necessary`packages (dependencies) which cannot or will not be installed for some reason, that's a different matter (of course, any "recommends" will also have dependencies which must be satisfied) That can and does happen if a repo is in a state of change or connection temporarily down. Then the apt system will delay installation till the error is resolved, that's intended behaviour.
I would not use Slavek's repo just now for a new install because I know it's updated often and sometimes is very slow. I install from official 3.5.13, currently quite static, then upgrade later. Maybe you were unlucky and hit it (axis) at the wrong time. I have seen failed TDE installs occasionally when the official 3.5.13 mirrors were not behaving but they seem fine at the moment.
When installing multiple packages (TDE) I always use <apt-get install -d package> that is, first download the packagees only. If all is well then go ahead and install. You will see in the terminal any download errors, if so stop, try again later the same way.
There are various cli method to resolve apt conflicts but if you don't know them, this might just be easiest:
apt-get update apt-get purge desktop-base-trinity kde-trinity apt-get install -d desktop-base-trinity kde-trinity apt-get install desktop-base-trinity kde-trinity
Most of it will be in you cache already so should be quite fast. If you prefer aptitude, use it's equivalent commands.
Re Exegnu Linux: It is deliberately stripped down to fit a CD and is not intended as a recommended alternative to official install instructions (it does work well and has an installer... but is not officially supported and may have it's own bugs) You can always add/remove packages later. In live-cd mode, it will verify your network connection and other hardware compatability.

I'm not, I think, going to gp far enough back without cleaning out the cache. I'll comment out Slávek's repositories ofr now, and purge and start again. Or I might just do a clean install to wipe out any mess I have created!

Yes, I have as I said I was doing, downloaded it. I have also put it, unsuccessfully, onto a USB-key. It won't boot. That was as far as I got, before I had to go out. So I have not used it yet.
Thanks for spending so much time giving me so helpful a reply. :-)

In contrast, I have always installed with my ppa. For example, recent update sudo-trinity can simplify the installation again. Kaffeine is no longer depending on kpackage and kdesudo.

I started again. I installed a fairly basic Squeeze system, I then installed LXDE (without a hitch), then desktop-base-trinity, also without a hitch. I used only the official repository.
I now had a working system with a terminal in which I could scroll back, and if I wanted copy in order to paste.
Next I tried to install kde-trinity. A long error message ensued. But this time I could scroll back to see the whole message. It appears to be saying that because it couldn't install/hadn't got 9 virtual packages, 265 packages would held (in a not-installed state), and only one of the 569 original packages was actually installed.
I have tried other mirrors, but it makes no difference.
I shall try David's suggestion, but am not sure what I would be looking for, nor what to do with it.
I shall let the whole thing stew for a bit, then if no further light dawns, I shall try with Trinity 12.
In the meantime, I am going to find out/learn how to make a bootable USB key from Exegnu Linux.
After that, I shall either self-immolate or start using another mail-client. But I like this one. :-(
See below for aptitude's suggested solution. The whole thing is rather long. I have tried without success to install the complained-of virtual packages. At least this time I can send you what I am seeing. Though you may curse me, I'm afraid.

I can't see any point using 3.5.12, 13+slavek's updates are so much better. If you made some mistake and repeat it, maybe you get the same result! The only problem I ever had installing 3.5.13 was when mirrors were down... however, I don't use "kde-trinity", too bloated for me.
In the meantime, I am going to find out/learn how to make a bootable USB key from Exegnu Linux.
Some usb keys dont have a proper mbr. If you use the script on the live-cd and it won't boot, this usually sorts it:
1. Plug the drive, don't mount it 2. Establish what the device is (/dev/sdx) like this, it should be obvious (substitute sdx for the right one and MAKE SURE to get it right): dmesg | tail -n 6 3. (su) install-mbr /dev/sdx 4, Mount it 4. syslinux -d syslinux
I left mbr tools out of the script, it is a root task with horrible consequences if you get it wrong.
@ Slavek: Thanks especially for sorting the sudo/su stuff for Debian, it's all working fine (except konsole-su still prompts for sudo password, even if sudo is not used, this is not so major)... as well as all the other updates.

Yes, quite sure. I successfully installed desktop-base-trinity!
Sources.list is not yet complete. I am adding only as necessary until I am under less uncomfortable conditions. And until I am reasonably sure that I am not about to reinstall. So it is as nature and Debian intended, with the sole addition of the one Trinity line. _________________________________________

I have done as little the same way as I could. Apart from update and upgrade, nothing was the same. And I broke what I was doing into smaller and smaller pieces in order to try and get the output a reasonable length. Whatever I did, I got the same result. I entirely agree that PEBKAC comes into this, but have no idea what I need to put right.
I have done this successfully, with no problems at all, quite a few times, so I too am puzzled. But I am running out of variables to change, and 3.5.12 would be a great deal better than nothing. Unless I can trace what is going wrong, I shall try 3.5.12 and your Live CD. I'll try what you suggest for that. But I also have a friend who uses nothing but USB-key "CDs", he hasn't even got an optical drive, and he is coming over, so I'll pick his brains if I haven't solved it by then.
Thank you for your generous help. Lisi

By the way, updated libcaldav, libcarddav, and sudo-trinity are included also in my ppa. And sudo-trinity is much better, than original from 3.5.13. ;)

No. I had (mistakenly?) thought that they could wait until I had a functioning system. Is that the problem?

Right, the builddeps go on now. I'll see if I can get on in any other editor in LXDE. I am a lousy typist, and prefer to be able to copy and paste more tricky things.
I have added the line and kde-trinity is installing as we speak. :-))) \o/
Oh - and leafpad is fine as an editor, can be launced from the command line and acceptes copy-and-paste.
So we now know what I was doing wrong. :-( PEBKAC with a vengeance.
Thank you so much, Slávek. You are, as I already knew, a genius.

Just an observation: If you're in a situation where you can only work via the console and can't scroll back to see errors that have scrolled off-screen then either pipe the command through a pager, like less, or re-direct std output & std err to a file. You can then use less or an editor, like nano, or even copy it to another system to view the entire output and find out what happened.
I held off from commenting earlier because I got bounced from trinity-users again (this only became apparent after I'd noticed that I hadn't received any trinity-users posting for about a month or so). Anyway, as a result I missed the start of this thread and I didn't realise that you hadn't actually been able to see the relevant messages.

...just to add, for those who don't already know...
a simple redirect, as Calvin shows, will only redirect std output but often the stuff you need to see is only sent to std error and not to std output.
For example:
~$ cat idontexist > errors.txt
will just produce an empty file because the resulting error message:
"cat: idontexist: No such file or directory"
...is still sent to the terminal via std error. To include std error in the redirect add an '&' to the redirect as below:
~$ cat idontexist &> errors.txt
Unfortunately, it's not possible to pipe stderr on its own but you can redirect stderr to stdout and then pipe that e.g.
~$ cat idontexist 2>&1 | less

Mmm. Two things spring to mind. Download corruption because of a bad network card or poor cable connections on the Ethernet connectors. Try replacing the cable.
Unless you took specific precautions against self inflicted static damage that is is always a possibility. Indeed I have damaged a mainboard or two by forgetfulness or being in a hurry and not double checked that things have been static safe or even worse still powered up but not running. The trouble with this kind of damage is that it can be immediate or some time later before it shows itself.
As far as an old network card is concerned, there is usually no problem with drivers, its more likely that the card is faulty. Again bad power supplies either to the card or on board can display weird behaviors.
Thanks for your help, Lisi
You're welcome. :-)
A very big thank you to all of you, for the level of help I have received. I am working my way through the suggestions.
Since I have often done similar installs before without a hitch, and everyone else still can, I think that the problem must be PEBKAC or hardware. :-( Hardware woudl also probably be PEBKAC because I am building this machine.

PEBKAC indeed, and due to my lack of typing skills, deteriorating eyesight - and lazyness. Not to mention stupidity.
I'm sorry to have put you all to so much trouble, and am extremely grateful for all your help. I am particularly slow on the uptake when I am panicking. And I was definitely panicking.
I had better buy myself a copy of The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy, and stand it up in front of myself. :-(
I make no apology for shouting. Indeed, I shall shout it from the rooftops. Thank you all very much for your patience, tolerance and kindness.

Well done Lisi.. sorted! We all make mistakes, me too, like when I wrote (to fix pendrive boot):
4. syslinux -d syslinux
was totally wrong, should have been:
5. syslinux -d syslinux /dev/sdx1

I am in the process of upgrading my arch linux kdemod3 installations to trinity 3.5.13. It is to this point going well with all of them except one, on wich I get errors on trinity startup:
Krandtray crashed signal 11 Korgac crashed signal 11 Klauncher said: Error loading 'kio_file' A kde text editor component could not be found Desktop preview & pager applet could not be loaded Taskbar applet could not be loaded System tray applet could not be loaded Clock applet could not be loaded
II have tried to create a new user and also to log in as root - same problems. I have checked that it is the tde version of hal and qt3 that are installed. I have tried to install tde again And I don't seem to get further with it - where can I look for tde specific error messages - any ideas??
On those that do work, I miss my Arch-modded greeter - How do I re-create the look of the arch kdemod greeter in the tde-greeter?
When I edit the login functions in the system control applet, there is no longer displayed any persons at login - is this a bug?
Regards
