greets, everybody . . .
this happened once before and i was able somehow to fix it. it has happened again, and i can't find the recipe to undo it.
through no action on my part, at least no deliberate action, the taskbar has gone from tiny icons + text to tiny icons only. if i set it for text only, i get no text and the icons become very dark. if i set it to icons only, i get icons only. if i set it to icons + text, i get icons only.
was working just fine an hour ago, and i've made no changes to software or configuration.
any idea how to fix this? it's pretty annoying.

Hi dep,
I also have the occasional issue with the taskbar, in my case it hides and won't come back up. When it happens, I usually have to log out, then log back in. Occasionally I can just 'Apply' different (seemingly random) settings until it re-sticks to how I had it setup in the first place.

Taskbar? as in, right-click lower panel to unlock?
If you do that, you get some settings for the lower panel and taskbar, but I don't see anything about icons. However, you ought to be able to set their size (and other panel items) in Trinity Control Center (TCC > Appearance and Themes > Icons > Advanced).
You can also get to the same place, for configuration of the taskbar, through TCC > Desktop > Taskbar.
In any case, one thing I've discovered through a lot of stupid experience: once you get the lower panel set as you want it, LOCK it down! (My entire lower panel sometimes likes to relocate itself to the side, or the icons like to wander around.) I suspect that something else you're doing, that's related to the taskbar, is changing it; for example, right-clicking to unlock the lower panel, for whatever reason, then forgetting to lock it again.
And it doesn't matter that I know this, because no matter how many times it's happened, I sometimes forget to lock the lower panel, then I end up wasting time trying to get it back like it was.
Happy hunting!
Bill

Thanks. Mine occasionally does as you describe, and I do as you suggest -- I change the size from full width to something else, then back again, hit Apply, and yes, it restarts. This has been an issue for *years.*
But it didn't work for the disappearing taskbar text. Which required me to logout and login again, on my system a nontrivial task. (In addition to interrupting existing processes it fubarred my VPN connection, which took until just now to diagnose and fix.)
I love TDE. It doesn't always love me back. -- dep

Add the icon thing to the issue queue? Especially if the random 'Apply' doesn't seem to work?

I think the Raspberry Pi's are still under US 50? If you've got that to spare, maybe look into using one of those to be a dedicated VPN connection?
I admit I've never tried it, but I have heard it works pretty well.

The reason I use TDE stems from my desire, nay conviction, to make my life less filled with unnecessary complications! -- dep

The Pis (except the Pico microcontroller) are a continuing victim of the pandemic chip shortage, making them rather hard to find right now unless you want to pay well over MSRP. So probably not practical until sometime next year unless one already owns a Pi.

Plandemic and oh-russia-so-bad-and-china-is-even-worse-hypocrism. I checked yesterday (need some Pi's for a project), ZeroW is ~ 50 teuros, RPi4 ~ 80 (deviverable "soon" aka 9/2023). OrangePis and NanoPis are available for a decent price (starting at ~ 20 teuros). But all of these are quite more expensive than running a VM with Linux / OpenWRT / IPFire / PFSense / OPNsense / ...

Hello dep,
instead of logging out and back in, maybe you could try the following command the next time it happens:
$ dcop kicker kicker restart
This should restart the panel only - maybe this suffices to fix that error. Additionally, you could try to explicitly specify the maximum width of the taskbar buttons:
$ kwriteconfig --file $TDEHOME/share/config/ktaskbarrc \ --group General --key MaximumButtonWidth 200 $ dcop kicker kicker restart
(value of 200 is the default for the kicker taskbar, so it shouldn't change anything visually from the default config)
Best regards, Leskala

Thanks. I suspect that the first thing you mention would be of use on the occasions kicker seems to die entirely, when I start kcontrol, change something in panels, change it back, hit "apply" and all is well. The random decision by the taskbar to rid itself of text is something different. It happens rarely, but when it does it's a problem that restarting kicker won't fix. It has happened two or three times now, over several years. It's unlikely to have anything to do with button width, because what was now missing had been there before, so it's not a configuration issue in and of itself. -- dep
