You probably encountered a problem with some of icon that leads to such freezing - see:

Unfortunately, it is not yet analyzed and resolved. You can try to see if you have installed in your case one of the icons that is in the attached archive and move them away from the directories for icons.

If you find the offending SVG icon, please upload it to that issue report in TGW. I am going to look into this bug soon.

thanks for all the quick replies. Indeed it looks like my problem is similar to the referenced bug (https://mirror.git.trinitydesktop.org/gitea/TDE/tde/issues/46). So I tried to remove some of the installed icon packages (e.g., adwaita-icon-theme), but that didn't fix the problem. I also looked at the 6 SVG files attached in that bug report but my system *does not* have any of them. So my issue is probably not caused by those 6 SVG files.

Then I (apt-get) remove the hicolor-icon-theme package, which removes almost all trinity dependencies. Then I reinstall trinity and now everything seems to work fine again.

Not an ideal way of debugging (I still don't know what exactly causes the problem), but at least it works. Hope you will find the real root cause and fix it soon.
