But it's the only way to run Natty.
Sigh.
Looks like a bunch of packages are now tde* instead of kde3* ... The apt-get update/dist-upgrade fails with lots of stuff like this:
tdebase-trinity : Depends: tdebase-trinity-bin (>= 4:3.5.14-0ubuntu0+r407+pr8~natty) but it is not installed Depends: tdebase-data-trinity (>= 4:3.5.14-0ubuntu0+r407+pr8~natty) but it is not installed Depends: tdebase-kio-plugins-trinity (>= 4:3.5.14-0ubuntu0+r407+pr8~natty) but it is not installed Depends: tdeprint-trinity (>= 4:3.5.14-0ubuntu0+r407+pr8~natty) but it is not installed Depends: twin-trinity (>= 4:3.5.14-0ubuntu0+r407+pr8~natty) but it is not installed Recommends: tdebase-runtime-data-common-trinity but it is not installed
I tried to install all that I could see that was missing:

but get this:

Naturally, TDE won't load after a reboot so I'm stuck in Gnome hell ...
Help?
Surely it's just a matter of removing X and installing Y, but what do those variables resolve to?

Since it's not close enough to a 3.5.14 release, it may or may not work.
Purge ALL of the TDE packages (don't just remove them); this is done with "apt-get remove (somepackage) --purge". That'll get rid of all of the old config files that could interfere.
Next, make sure that the directory /opt/trinity/ is completely removed.
Finally, install the nightly build.

Wellll ... There are only two tde pkgs installed, and one looks like it's not completely there:
ii tde-ubuntu-integration 0.1-0 TDE Ubuntu Integration iU tdebase-trinity 4:3.5.14-0ubuntu0+r407+pr8~natty base components from the official KDE release
When I try to remove them, I get the same dependency messages.
Ugh.

Just a reminder: the nightly builds are NOT for public consumption. The migration to GIT is nowhere near complete, so about 1/3 of the packages are available at this point. They are NOT binary compatible with 3.5.13, and the packaging files for Ubuntu/Debian do not yet allow for a smooth upgrade. The packages in the nightly builds PPA are pre-alpha quality software at the moment!

Also, you should be using 3.5.13 (released a few weeks ago), which is available for Ubuntu Lucid through Oneiric. See the home page for installation instructions. :-)

All true and I knew (mostly) what I was getting into ... but ... I've been using them daily for over a month and have had *very* few issues. And by "using them", I mean that this is my workstation at work. I do admit that I don't update daily.
Printer driver issues, some goofiness with HALD, and now this have been the only issues, really, oh, and some screen rendering problems. Otherwise, it's pretty solid.
Yes, this is intended as a compliment! :-)

I wouldn't have expected too many changes to have been going on since 3.5.13 was released on the 1st of the month. Once the heavy development begins is usually when the issues with the nightly builds begin.

Kristopher is correct. You were using the nightly builds in the months leading up to a new release; once development begins again (as it has) the nightly builds can be expected to eat your cat and other such nastiness. I would NOT use them on any system (I don't either) during the initial migration and rename process. I only install them on test machines that are not used for any other purpose, and they are only available in the first place for that purpose (i.e. accelerating the development process).
Be warned. :-)

Dual booting with a spare Linux install that you never use would certainly work if you don't have a spare computer.
Definitely avoid nightly builds for situations where stability is needed ;-)
