I did a quick check, my local shop sells 'HGST Touro Mobile' XHDD
for $55. So, I'll grab one next week and backup all of my home files
(shoulda did that already) and then install the new OS.

Yep, but be aware that if anything goes wrong you WILL lose your data.
You don't say how much space you have or why another drive is no option, but having
700 GB of valuable data and no backup... that's dangerous.
Hard disks do die...

Honestly I don't think you'll loose your data, as long as you choose
not to reformat it. I can't imagine a scenario where they do a full
disk wipe

I know a guy who was let go from an admin job (Linux no less) for using
the 'mv' (move) command instead of "copy>verify>delete old"...of
course
dealing with your own data one can take all kind of risks. :-)
No reason not to have back ups.

back-up, back-up, back-up. ;-) I have retained /home quite often
when installing or reinstalling, and alwasy got away with it so far,
but I would never not back-up at least once first, more often if
possible.

back-up, back-up, back-up. ;-)
I have retained /home quite often when installing or reinstalling,
and always got away with it so far, but I would never not back-up
at least once first, more often if possible.
