Greets!
I decided to upgrade from Jessie to Stretch last night. it seems to have worked though there are some oddities.
now VLC has grotesquely large control buttons ("Pause", etc.); the interface in general seems to run on a different 'theme' and anyway is over-large.
I have tried the "forced window style" option under "preferences" but none of the various options but they make no different in these respects. maybe 'CDE' comes closest.
I have purged and re-installed VLC also to no avail.
I have looked at the 'themes' VLC offers. awful. just want my orange-colored working interface back.
the only other application I've found which has undergone similar changes is Pan - it has a more 'pastel' shaded control set which I don't appreciate but can ignore.
note a complication: I had Devuan installed and just did the Stretch update but not sure of its relevance (thus I mention it).

Hello,
All I can say is I have stretch and TDE on several machines, as well as VLC, and I see none of these. No idea if Devuan could be a source of trouble but your problem quite probably has a local cause.
I add a snaphot of what vlc looks like here, in case what I see is what you find ugly :)

it is beautiful. I am overwhelmed!
and jealous. it's more or less what I used to have.
had trouble trying to fetch older versions from online. one compile failed but don't want to open another "rabbit hole".
I've played with some skins but they don't solve the problem (big control buttons) and they add different varieties of ugliness.
I'm in the process of pulling it up by the roots (synaptic seems helpful, 'apt-get purge' left a lot of debris) and attempting a reinstall.

what happens if you create a fresh user and try with fresh (default) settings?
I used 'adduser' and opened the session; still problem with VLC.
so, yeah, something in the basic system.
I suspect I have to fool around with gtk2 somewhere. I dread that but may dig in tonight.
the other applications I use seem ok. Pan has changed its interface so that the menu icons are more 'pastel', which I dislike, but I generally ignore them anyway.

a new wrinkle - hadn't noticed but the menu options in OpenOffice are now only visible if you pass the mouse cursor over them.
weird.
the laptop is an ASUS UX305F.
no such problems until Stretch. of course, I may have mangled the update somehow.
tried a reboot also. this thing usually runs 24/7.

vlc is qt5 app. You need to install qt5-style-plugins. After that you can force theme in vlc setting. There is no qt3 of course, but there is gtk2, and gtk2 theme is not hard to configure. The other solution is qt5ct, but its not in stretch. You can build the buster version with apt-src.

I installed qt5-style-plugins; gtk2 is already available, indeed, I've tried setting 'force windows style' to this toolset.
still big buttons. overlarge 'window' for VLC in general though font-size is ok.
