If I understood correctly...
click on file type
close konq
relaunch konq and see if the setting remains.
It does. When I relaunch konq, it's still set to sort by file type.
The setting remains, the function does not match the setting.

/sbin or /etc is a good test — hundreds of files lets the bug expose itself.
