It supposedly causes the mail or news reader "display the face before the From header". Seems to have no effect in kmail...

How can you read news in KMail? Did you read the documentation on X-Face? Nowdays we have google and wikipedia.
X-Face is only for newsgroup ;-) so no chance to see it in the mail I guess.
It is on the right place - I was just amazed to see it is supported.

huh, that's kind of cute and actually useful. But Fancy takes a lot of screen space :( , so I can't see myself ever using it...
I didn't see an obvious way to view the icon in a column in the message list window, not even sure it's possible actually, but guess I'll ask: Does it populate one? If so which?

And yet, there it is (see attached). I got the text I quoted above from the description of X-face. I suppose they know what it works with.
